It's so annoying to see people loving their dogs more than anything else. They are more excited to see their dogs more than their own friends and family. This drives me nuts.
It Just drives me nuts. Friends, family, new acquaintances -- it's like pulling teeth to have a semi-intelligent conversation with anyone these days. Then you see them walk in the house to their dog, and it's like they've been holding back all day. Suddenly they're this excited, energetic person because they see their dog. Their dog that they make sit up in their apartment for eight hours a day while they're at work.

What the heck is it with our society and dogs? People are freaking obsessed with their dogs. Spend more money on their dogs than anyone else in their lives. Talk about them incessantly.

I even heard an old couple the other day talking to their "grandson" on video chat. It was a FREAKING DOG. Their daughter is single and has a dog. They call this their "grandson."

This is a mental illness. Baby replacement syndrome. A manifestation of chronic loneliness. A resentment of one's own humanity in favor dogs. Call it whatever you want, just drives me nuts.

I walk in to my mother's house today -- none of us have seen her in six months -- and the dog is the first thing anyone goes to hug. What the HELL? This woman raised you, and this dog you've only known for three years, and you only see it every few months.

Dogs are not people. They are gross animals. You pick up their poop with your hands. They can be great additions to a family, but they are not "members of the family."

This made me So MAD, I told my sisters the story of my college friend who breeds hunting dogs in rural Arkansas. If he can't sell one after a few months, he shoots it. Because it's a dog. Because he can't afford to keep feeding a dog that no one wants. Because people out there would laugh at taking a dog to the "animal shelter." Because they are poor and dogs are tools for hunting, not "family members."

My sisters were all horrified. Thought it should be illegal. Because "that's so sad!" Well lots of things are sad. I stepped on a rare beetle the other day. That's sad. Should we make that illegal? Because it's "sad"?

Give me a break. Our society needs to grow up. Have kids. Work with the poor. Sacrifice your time to help those in need. Then come back and decide whether your dog is your "baby" and worth spending thousands of dollars a year to ensure their lives are perfect.
