Tucked away in a far corner of modern, cosmopolitan Singapore is the old village of Lorong Buangkok, the last remaining kampong (traditional Malay community) in the city-state. This tiny village is just steps from a main road, but I cycled past it numerous times (on a well-paved cycling / jogging path) before I ever noticed this entrance and discovered the pleasant little enclave behind all the bushes.

Lorong Buangkok remains home to only a few dozen families, who live in simple wooden houses with basic utilities, connected by dirt paths. Only 50–60 years ago, most of Singapore comprised small enclaves such as this. Unfortunately, this area is slated for development, and the residents will eventually have to move out.
