The Cranium Stadium

As always, before we get into this week’s challenge, I must first announce last week’s winner.

Winner from Week #4
@doughtaker
@nihalmaz

Proof of transfer.

Usually, I only choose one winner. However, this week, I feel that both of these participants deserve a reward. @nihalmaz got both questions correct, but his answer let me know that I did not word the second problem exactly as I had hoped. After reading his answer, I went back and updated the question (requiring the answer to be more specific). However, I did not tell him that I updated the question, so I will give him credit for being first. @doughtaker was then able to answer both of the questions correctly in the updated form. So, each of them will get 50% of the SBD from the post.

Answer to Question #1 (from Week #4)

For the first question, you had to find decode the following message:

DRDNZ EIG XPDF; GLS DRDNZ EIG NDIYYZ YPRDF.

The answer was: “Every man dies; not every man really lives.”

This was a random letter code (as opposed to the previous week’s shifted alphabet code), but once you start getting the letters, it all falls into place!

This question also had a second part. You had to tell me who said that quote. And that person was William Wallace.

Two Steemians got this question correct, and they were our two winners: @nihalmaz and @doughtaker.

Answer to Question #2 (from Week #4)

The second question was a three-part science question.

A

According to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, what happens to the force of gravity between two objects as you increase the distance between the objects? (You may look this part up.)

Answer: It decreases.

B

According to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, what happens to the force of gravity between two objects when you increase either object’s mass? (You may look this part up.)

Answer: It increases.

C

In one scenario, two objects are separated by a certain distance. The mass of the first object is 10,000 kg and the mass of the second object is 20,000 kg. Let’s call the force of gravity between them, F. In a separate scenario, two other objects are separated by three times the distance of the first two objects. The masses of these two objects are 30,000 kg and 5,000 kg. Assume that in each scenario, the two objects exist in complete isolation. How does the force of gravity for the second pair of objects compare to the force of gravity on the first pair? (Be specific. For example, say 2x larger, or 1/100 as much.)

Answer: It is 1/12 of the original force.

How do you get that? Well, you have to understand the relationship both distance and mass have on gravity. Gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. That means if the distance doubles, gravity is 1/4 of the original. So, in our problem, being 3x further apart makes the gravity 1/9 as strong.

However, you can’t stop there because the mass changes, too. Gravity is directly proportional to the masses of the object. If you double the mass, you double the force of gravity. But this effect must be measured for each object. In our example, you can see that the mass increased from 10,000 kg to 30,000 kg, which is a 3 fold increase. This increases gravity by 3 times. However, the other object goes from 20,000 kg to 5,000 kg, which is 1/4 of the original. That means gravity is 1/4 of the original.

To get the combined effect, you have to multiply the three effects together:

1/9 * 3 * 1/4 = 1/12

.
Once again, those same two Steemians got this correct: @nihalmaz and @doughtaker..

Without further ado, let’s move onto this week’s challenges!

Remember, to enter, you need to do the following:

  • Put your answer in a comment on this post. Please don’t say HOW you got the answer and spoil the fun for everyone else. :)
  • Upvote this post (that is where your reward will come from!)
  • Make sure to answer all parts of all questions
  • Each participant is allowed ONLY ONE entry. Only the most recent comment by each participant will be evaluated.

Optional but appreciated:

  • Resteem this post so that more Steemians can see it and increase the reward pool!

Rewards

Everyone who gets 1 out of the 2 challenges correct will get an upvote by me.

After post payout, I will give 50% of the SBD earned from the post to the winner (the first person to get both questions correct).

Most importantly, fun and a good mental activity to help your brain stay strong!

This Week's Problems

#1 - Decode This Message - Random Assortment

Two weeks, I started with an easy type of code: alphabet shift. Last week was a bit harder, but the spaces were still shown. This week, we take it up a notch. Now, spaces are also a part of the code. That means that one of the letters represents a space in the real phrase, and a space in the code represents a letter in the real phrase. With that in mind, here is the scrambled message:

”_HSY_HOGANYFIZYIMGYSGJYZDYIMGOGAYFIZ”

Again, I have no way of telling if you cheated on this one or not. I am just really just relying on your integrity and honor as fellow Steemians.

The second part of the question is: Who said the above quote, and which movie is it from? (You can look it up if you don’t know.)

#2 - Answer all parts of the question (A and B).

A man walks 300 km to the north, then turns and walks 10,000 m to the east, then turns to the south and runs 4,000,000 cm. After that he takes a break to eat 5 muffins. It takes him 32.5 seconds to eat the muffins before continuing on. He walks to the west for 80,000,000 nm. He then turns to the south and runs at a speed of 1.5 km/min for 3.25 hours. Based on this answer the two following questions:

A

What is the total distance traveled?

B

How far is he from the starting point?

Have fun and do your best!

  1. The things you own end up owning you
    Brad Pitt in fight club

2A. 606500m
2B. 3400.344m

Thanks for playing, @gaintshoulder! You got one of the two answers correct, so you got a 100% upvote by me. Check out this week's post with new questions, here.

Ummm... I haven't done #1 yet, but I have some questions on #2...

  • In #2 part B, I'm getting an irrational answer. How many decimal places do you want the answer accurate to? (Or, do you want the expression that would produce the exact answer?)

  • Where's #2 part C?

I see you already answered, but just two decimal places is fine. I will be sure to be more specific in the future. :)

Also, there is no part C, I used the heading from the last post which did have a part C and forgot to delete it. Ha! Thanks for participating!

Or now that I've gotten #1 as well I'm just going to turn in my answers based on what you've posted.

  1. "THE THINGS YOU OWN END UP OWNING YOU" - Brad Pitt (as Tyler Durden) in Fight Club

2a. 642,500.08 m
2b. sqrt(1156248400.0064) m, or about 34,003.65274056669... m (32,500 m south and 9,999.92 m east of the starting point)

You win! I have already transferred the money to your account. You can find the new problems here.

1- THE THINGS YOU OWN END UP OWNING YOU

2a) 642.4992

2b) 34.00344

Thanks for playing, @gduran. You were so close! Make sure to answer all parts of all questions in order to get credit for your answers. This week, you can find the problems here.

  1. Hakuna Matata - It Means No Worries; by Pumba in the Lion King

  2. 345.98 m is the total distance traveled; and he is 251.94 m from the starting point

Thanks for playing! You did not get either answer correct, though.
