Defend the indefensible! Boris Johnson v John Bercow 10 SBD to be won

in #contest7 years ago

So yesterday there was an eventful episode in the House of Commons where John Bercow the Speaker of the House accused Boris Johnson of using sexist language and proceeded to give him a dressing down.

Whilst answering a question from a Conservative MP on the Commonwealth, Boris said "the Baroness, whatever it is, I cannot remember what it is .. Nugee"

After finishing the rest of his reply Mr Bercow rebuked him with "We do not address people by the titles of their spouses" and went on to say "The shadow Foreign Secretary has a name, and it is not Lady something. We know what her name is. It is inappropriate and frankly sexist to speak in those terms, and I am not having it in this Chamber"

he went on to add "That is the end of the matter. No matter how senior a Member, that parlance is not legitimate. It will not be allowed, and will be called out."

Boris Johnson was quick to apologise for his "inadvertent sexism"

A link to the episode on Youtube is here :-

So what I want to know is who was in the wrong? Was Boris Johnson Sexist and John Bercow right to call him up on it. Or was John Bercow going over the top and going beyond what a Speaker in the House of Commons should comment on.

Defend Bercow

Does he refer to Jacob Rees-Mogg by his wife’s Ladyship? No. Rees-Mogg gets his own name; but he chose to refer to a woman by her husband’s title, when she is an MP in her own right. Her husband is irrelevant.
I wish Emily Thornbury had responded by calling him 'Marina Wheeler's part-time husband'

I have no idea what is fashionable these days in the British politics, but I have to defend Boris Johnson. His crazy hair aside, he did dangle from a zip line for Queen and Country.

Can we say the same for John Bercow? I think not!

EDIT: Read again the rules of the contest... and on the second reading saw the minimum of 50 words and to post my reply under Defend X. Sorry @stimp1024 for totally missing it :-)

Don't worry I will be lenient this time round! Do you know I was on that exact same zip wire a day after or before, I can't remember exactly and got stuck exactly in the same spot. I think it was a day after because I didn't hang around quite as long as Boris did, they then had a hook thing to pull you in as the finish was still a bit off the ground. I reckon they got the slope all wrong or trying to fit it in the space they messed up the slope as it was flat towards then end and that led to people getting stuck. But like you say you have to love old Boris at least he is a bit of fun!

To everyone posting don't mind if you don't post under my comments and I'll be lax on the 50 word rule as I didn't actually put it in the rules section. But I won't except short answers like "Boris is great" I want to know the reason you defend them.

Defend Boris

Boris Defended!
What is sexist about Johnson’s statement? Bercow is a hypocrite. Representatives in the house have used worse names on each other in the past and Bercow has allowed these to go through. Bercow has shown that he is not politically neutral which he has to be as speaker of the house, he should get the boot.

Nothing Johnson said was the slighted bit "sexist" and he was right to out the champagne socialists that occupy the Labour front bench. Bercow is a jumped up little twit and it's no wonder his wife seeks male attention elsewhere.

As nob-'eaded as Boris may sometimes be, this was not a sexist remark. He was trying to wrongfoot her, certainly, but with the suggestion that she was more of a part of the Establishment than she might otherwise pretend: something like "she might pose as a friend of the people but she's one of us really". The merits of that accusation are another matter.

Defend Bercow
In normal circumstances Boris words would be OK but it is obvious that he is using them to denigrate and diminish an opponent. Not necessarily sexist but definitely rude and no place in respectful debate

Defend none to be honest. Men are the same and always going to remain the same.
like how guardian stated
"Johnson apologises for 'sexist' reference to Emily Thornberry" source: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/mar/27/johnson-apologises-for-sexist-reference-to-emily-thornberry

Bercow interrupted Johnson: “First, we do not name call in this chamber, and secondly ... we do not address people by the titles of their spouses. The shadow foreign secretary has a name and it is not ‘Lady Something’.

Like who really cares in 2018 when the who world is in chaos. we are making things way to big to care about. nothing happend to pussy grabbing statement by donald trump did that change the world?

great article from last year
" A year on from Trump’s pussy grab, nothing has changed"

boris defennd

Not sexist at all he did not know her name though he did know she is a baroness so to address her as such is only her due. It does not matter that she commonly goes by her maiden name her title is a valid address by which to call her. To "dress down" bojo for its use is to admit you're lack of a solid rebuttal to his arguments and you're own lacking knowledge of England's long standing traditions.
