Aha. You asked a two part question and here is my two part answer.

Part 1: Is it ethically wrong or right for humans to raise animals so that we can eat them? For as long as we have recorded history, man has raised animals as livestock. This is obviously because it is much more efficient that having to catch your food every time you are hungry. It also allowed humans to raise animals specifically as food which some might argue allowed wild animals of that same species to continue on and thrive. Or did it? Over the millennia, domesticated versions of animals like chickens, cows, sheep and several other farm animals were all that were left. Man was more than likely responsible for this. Is it ethical?

Part 2: Is it ethically wrong or right for humans to kill animals so that we can eat them? Man more than likely started eating animals because he found that they were the most satisfying type of food available. Animal flesh is nutritionally the most complete food for humans and provides the densest set of important nutrients as well. For those humans who moved around a lot or who lived in climates that were harsh at least part of the year, it was probably the only choice available if they wanted to survive.

However today, with our food technology advances, the majority of the people on the planet have a choice about how they get their nutrition and although meat remains the most efficient choice, plants can be substituted in most cases effectively, bring us to your question about ethics.

Ethics are moral principals and morals are based on belief systems. If you are a Christian you probably believe that God says it is ok to eat some animals. Same with Jews and Muslims. If you have a different set of beliefs, you may feel differently. In the end, even though people will not often look at it this way, it will be more of a matter of your view of life than any other singular thing. If you believe it is ok to raise and kill animals so that humans can eat them, you simply will. If not, you won't. So wrong or right will be subjective.

Sorry for the long post to get to an unsatisfying answer. However what we should also look at in examining this question is how interesting it is that most humans will eat some animals and never accept eating others that have perfectly good meat. We call these animals pets. If you eat your pets you are not only morally wrong, you need some serious help my friends. Thanks and hoped you enjoyed the answer.

I do agree, it's a complicated question and lots of different angles to look at. I guess that now that we have technology and many other things, we should start thinking on stopping this way of feeding the world, otherwise it will end up killing all animals, including humans. That's a really nice and elaborated reply, thanks for your time!

My pleasure and I agree with you. We have to find better ways because we are being very cruel to animals and Mother Nature has a way of seeking balance. We have the technology now to create meat in other ways but it will take people expanding their idea of food. I am not sure they are quite ready for that. Not yet anyway. Thanks for your kind answer as well.
