Learn To Draw With Friends!

Would you like to learn how to draw or improve your drawing skills?? Would you also like the to get feedback on your work and tips and advice from other artists?? And would you like to have the chance of winning a prize while you are doing so??

If the answer to any of these questions is yes then why not take part in the new weekly 'Learn To Draw With Friends!' contest! Our first week was really successful with loads of great entries and lots of good feedback from all of the entrants so we are hoping that the contest will continue in this vain and attract more new entries every week.

We have been very blessed to have some fantastically talented and very helpful members of the community take part but we would especially like to see more entries from those who are new to drawing and also from younger members. If you would like to get your children involved by having them submit an entry, that would be fantastic also!

The contest is designed to be fun, with an emphasis on learning and improving skills....it is not just for talented artists and the awarding of prizes will reflect this with prizes going to those who have shown the most effort or improvement as the contest progresses. It is also designed to help make new friends and gain new followers so that we can support each other on the platform so please do not be shy about having a go! :)

The prize pool this week will again be 35 SBD but will be broken down a little differently from last week.

1ST Prize will be 15 SBD!!

2ND Prize will be 10 SBD!!

3RD Prize will be 5 SBD!!

And there will again be 5 runner up prizes of 1 SBD!!

I did say last week that I would consult on how the prizes should be broken down so if anyone has a better breakdown I would be happy to hear it and put it to everyone taking part!

As I mentioned in last weeks launch post, prizes for this week will be awarded based on the number of votes each entry recieves. With this being the case it will be partly up to you to raise awareness of your entry among your own followers and encourage them to vote for your entry. I would suggest that you turn your entry into a post for your own blog in order to do this but there is no requirement to do so. Again, the number of votes will be counted and won't be based on upvote rewards!

So, for this weeks contest I have chosen the theme of 'Portrait'.

I have chosen three images this week for contestants of different skill levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced! You are free to choose whichever image that you feel comfortable with and if you like you can try all three and enter three times.

Here are the images I have chosen for this week!

homer_portrait resized.jpg

Beginner!

intermediate_portrait resized.jpg

Intermediate!

advanced_portrait resized.jpg

Advanced!

RULES!!

Your entry must be one of the three images above!

You must resteem and upvote this post for your entry to be valid!

You must post your entry in the comments section of this post for it to be a valid entry! It must be visible for others to see and upvote! If you decide to make your own post that would be great but I will not accept a posted link only. It must be visible!

The winners will be decided by the community with the highest number of upvotes claiming first prize, second highest claiming second prize and third highest claiming third prize! Runner up prizes will be decided by myself!

ONLY PENCIL DRAWINGS, EITHER BLACK AND WHITE OR COLOUR, WILL BE ACCEPTED AS VALID ENTRIES!!

The contest will close after the seven day reward period!

I hope that everyone who takes part has a fun time and also takes the time to support the other entrants with any helpful advice or by upvoting the entries you like! Remember, while it is a contest with prizes, the main reason we are here is to help one another and give support! I will also be posting my entry this week although it will ofcourse not be valid!! :)

Please take the time to check out a recent post of mine that really means a lot to me by clicking the link below!

Here is my 3rd entry - definitely the most challenging of the set.

I made a full post showing my progress as I went along with this drawing as well.

I hope you like my drawing, if so, please upvote me.

Thank you!

Wow that one is awesome! Did u used just this one pencil? Which quality is it? 2B?

Yep, it's just a standard #2 pencil that our local grocery store (Publix) gave my son for school supplies.

Nice :)

Brilliant @steempowerpics! You have done the contest proud with the time you have taken and the effort you have put in. I have been distracted by other matters a bit more than I had intended or would have liked this week and haven't been able to get as many people involved as last week but I hope to get a bit more interest and a few more entries over the next couple of days.

My apologies my friend!

I will of course be upvoting and resteeming your excellent post and hope that it helps attract some more attention to your blog!

Hope your day is going well as always!

Hey Tony, Thank you. I totally understand life getting in the way of plans and ambitions from time to time. I'm happy I was able to accomplish all 3 for you so others can follow you're lead on learning to draw.

My son had watched me draw the Homer D'oh-nut entry and that inspired him to draw a Minion and a Minecraft character based of his toys. I plan on posting them on Wednesday for the yellow colorchallenge.

You have my vote!

Thank you so much :-)

Awesome work! Upped and followed as we are very alike :)

Hi everyone! Here is the post about my entries and my drawings you can see here. @tonyr have I did all ok? This is my first time participating in this contest so I hope I did everything good :)

YAY! Another triple entry. You did great @oceansoul13. You've got a vote from me.

Thank you so much @steempowerpics! I'm glad you like it :)

A fabulous entry @oceansoul13! thanks so much for taking the time and going to so much effort in your entries to the contest. The winning entries will be determined by how many votes they recieve so it would be good if you could get some of your followers to vote for your entries!
Hope your day is going well! :)
Good luck to you!

My submission.....

That is a fantastic effort @offgridlife! You are a very talented artist! And very quick at drawing also. :)

Thank you for a fantastic entry my friend! I hope you had fun taking part! Remember you can enter three times so feel free to have a go at the other two also if you like! There is still plenty of time. :)

I hope you enjoyed taking part and are enjoying finding your way around steemit!

Good luck buddy!

Thanks - that was a quick 5 minute sketch on my coffee break - we don't have very good pencils here so I'll follow along and enter other contests when I have a better pencil and paper. I'll get my kids to enter too. They don't have Steemit accounts so can the enter under my account?

That's an incredible sketch for just a few minutes. I can't wait to see what you do when you have more than a coffee break :-) I started with Homer and will take a crack at the other 2 later.

Ofcourse they can! I would be very happy if they could join us and learn to draw with friends! :)

Great contest and community building effort.
I cant draw, and actually dont care to... but i can see where someone who can draw would enjoy creating some art. Maybe one of these times ill try to draw something??
Anyways, great idea and i hope you get plenty of users to participate. You get my vote

Thank you so much for your support @generation.easy!

If you find a little time in the next seven days we would love to see you have a go!! :)

Hope your day is going well!

Here is my entry to the contest fellow steemers! I am quite happy with the outcome but please feel free to give me any advice you may have for improvement! I'm always keen to improve my skills!

Thanks to all of you for taking part!!! :{)

I see we had similar techniques for starting the sketch and both opted for a white background - would have burned through the whole pencil trying to shade it all in. Nice job. :-)

:) thank you @steempowerpics. I saw your post where you were asking your followers to support you by voting for your entry. A really excellent post my friend and I appreciate the time and effort you put into the drawings.

I really hope you had fun and so glad you decided to tske part.

Thanks again my friend and hope your day is going well!

You're welcome. I figured I'd give it one more try to get some eyeballs to the contest page. Hopefully next time around we will get more support.

I joined the steemit discord group the other day ( I had no idea what it was) in order to enter a b/w photography contest I have a post for. That might be a good place to promote the contest and get entries next time. It has a channel for contests. This is the link I used to join from his contest post https://discord.gg/CFJ97HW

was never big on drawing but never too late to get better I guess. kinda late to the post but here goes anything, came out a little sloppy but better than I expected to do :)

This is excellent @blaxalb! :)

Thanks so much for entering the contest. As you can see we haven't had the greatest turnout this week so far which means that you are more than likely to win a prize of some description my friend! :)

Why not have a go at the other two as well and make a post of it for your own blog?

Thanks again for entering and hope your day is going well!

Great contest, I hope I remember to enter. I like the rules and set up, good luck with this!

Thank you @cryplectibles! We look forward to receiving your entry!!! :)

I'm in! I will try to do all 3 in order if I have time this week. I'm a bit rusty with the freehand sketching, but this is a great opportunity to brush up on my skills.

Thank you so much for taking part @steempowerpics! We look forward to seeing your entry my friend!

Hope you have fun with the contest! :)

Here is my first entry - I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I enjoyed drawing it.

This page has been ReSteemed and Upvoted!

Great Entry @steempowerpics!!

Thank you :-)

This is a fantastic post and entry for the contest @steempowerpics!

Thank you so much for putting in so much effort and taking the time to show all of the workings of your process. We are blessed to have you take part in the contest and I'm sure others who are just starting out will find this a big, big help!!

Really, really happy that you have taken the time to do such a great job!! :)

I hope you had fun my friend!!

Good luck to you!!

I am of course following you now and am sure you will gain some more followers from such a great post!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of steemit! :)

Thank you. I appreciate your positive review of my drawing. It's been a while, I had to go raid my son's coloring supplies :-)

I will attempt the other 2 options in the next day or so.

I am excited to be a part of SteemIt. It's only my first week, but I've met a lot of really great people here.

This post received a 4.3% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @tarazkp! For more information, click here!

Here is my 2nd entry - I had fun drawing it, as it forced me to rediscover a long past skill.

MysteryGirl-Final.jpg

I made a full post showing my progress as I went along with this drawing as well.
https://steemit.com/contest/@steempowerpics/mystery-girl-my-learn-to-draw-with-friends-contest-entry-2

If you like my drawing, please upvote me. I will attempt the 3rd rendering in a day or so.

Another fantastic entry @steempowerpics! You are really, really talented and have done the contest proud with both of your entries so far and also the posts you have made in support of them.

I'm sure some of our other entrants will be able to learn a few things from your efforts and are looking forward to seeing your third entry.

I am really pleased that you are having fun and have rediscovered your passion for drawing my friend! That wss the reason I decided to start the contest so it is really rewarding to see it working out for yourself and others. I recently rediscovered my own passion for drawing and though I don't have as much time as I would like to devote to it, I am glad of any spare time I can find to pick up the pencils again!:)

Thank you Tony. You have some crazy skills yourself. I was looking at some of your early posts with the sketches you have done. Really nice.

I am always happy to share what I know with others. Hopefully in time as I gain some followers, I will have more reach and a positive impact on the Steemit community.

Thank you @steempowerpics! Part of the reason for the contest is to help and support each other and I am happy to resteem the posts you made for the contest in the hope that maybe you will gain a follower or two. I'm sure it will not be long til you have a big following my friend!

Hope your day is going as well as my own! :) :)

Doing good :-) Thank you for the support and resteems.

I'm still apprehensively eyeing the 3rd challenge LOL I will take a crack at it tonight or tomorrow. That one will take some quiet time and focus.

How do I upvote if I dont have any steem? I'm new to Steemit but I am an artist.

You should still be able to upvote @offgridlife but if not I will accept your entry without one but it will still have to be resteemed to be valid! :)

Hope you are having a great day and enjoy the contest my friend!

Do I need steem to upvote? I dont understand my wallet. I have $1.09 I think????

Just go to the bottom of the post and you should see a little circle with an upward pointing arrow. If you click on this you will upvote the post! :)

OK ..... Does it cost me money to do that?

Upvoting does not cost you anything my friend! It is your way of rewarding others from the reward pool which is available to all of us to use! :)

OK - I will

OK - I upvoted and the $$$ amount went up by $1.09 I think?

submission 2. ok this one was pretty rushed hehe but doesnt look too bad I guess
Also made a post for the contest here https://steemit.com/tag/@blaxalb/my-drawing-contest-entries

I love this concept! I hope to see this becoming a reoccurring contest :) I'd love to enter next time

I had hoped it would be a weekly contest but I'm having to suspend it for a couple of weeks due to my 'real' life being a bit hectic at the moment but hope to be back in a couple of weeks and would love to see you take part. Thanks for the lovely compliment about my Sean Connery drawing! :)

You have a new follower also @mrslauren! :)

Yeah I get it completely! I'm following you as well so when things get a bit calmer, I'll be able to be notified of it! Thank you for the follow as well! That's very kind

It's my pleasure @mrslauren!

Hope your day goes well and looking forward to speaking again in future! :)

How do I paste an image into comments? from my phone?

This is great Tony, I don't think I am going to have the time to enter but I will resteem and upvote it.

Thank you so much Taraz! I am really humbled and grateful for the resteem !

I have just read your wifes latest post and she is a fantastic writer like yourself! I think she will do very well and be very happy as part of the steemit community!

Thanks again!! I really, really appreciate it!!

Hope you are enjoying the changes around here! :)

I will repost and upvote but I don't have time for contests, I wish I could join in on the fun.

Thank you so much @reddust! You are very kind and I know that you are very busy producing your own excellent work! :)

I appreciate the upvote and resteem from yourself very, very much!!

Look forward to seeing what you have for us next! :)

Okay this sounds like fun. I've always liked to draw but am quite bad at it so maybe this will help me get better...

Here is my entry for the beginner drawing:
20170621_094954.jpg
Good luck everyone. :D

That was a very speedy entry @frostyamber! :)

Everybody has to start somewhere and drawing is a skill that can be learned and improved by everyone I feel so please keep taking part in the contest and if you would like any tips or advice for improving please do not be shy and feel free to ask any of our entrants! We are a friendly bunch and always happy to help! :)

There's still plenty of time to have a go at the intermediate level! You may surprise yourself! :)

Please remember to upvote and resteem the post for your entry to be valid and also to show support for our other entrants!

Hope you are having a great day and good luck to you! :)

I can't draw hair, hands or eyes for some reason they always look out of whack. I will glad accept any tips or hints available. :D Like I said I've always liked to draw but have never been good at it.

I tried, to learn by tracing other drawings but didn't help me when I went to do free hand, hopefully I can get some tips to help me at least improve a bit.

I don't expect to make a living at it or anything but I'd love to draw a picture of my family that actually looks like my family or of something that actually really looks like the item I'm drawing. :D

Look forward to some helpful tips on this picture. I tried to draw the other two but I made Sir Connery look horrible and that poor gal doesn't look much like the sample picture either. LOL. :D

It is a difficult skill to master to be sure but as someone said to me lately, practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect! :)

As with anything else, the more you do something and the more structured you are in your approach, the more you will be rewarded with improvement. I am sure that if you keep taking part over the next few weeks you will be able to look back at this entry and see the improvement you have made.

Drawing is a tentative and slow process at times. It cannot be rushed. I would advise you to start by printing out the image and and use your tracing paper only to gauge the distances between the different points of the drawing. For example, make a small dot or x at the extremities of each feature rather than tracing the whole thing and when you have made all of the marks you feel you need to, then freehand it like a dot to dot drawing. The marks should only be a guide to help you at first but they should all be in the right place and give your picture the right proportions. When you have done this a few times and feel comfortable, try doing it freehand only and hopefully you will have gained a better understanding of the proportions of your drawing!

You still have two more entries available to you and I would be happy to accept three entries of the beginner image so why don't you give it another go and see if you can improve on your original!

I would love to see the result!! ;)

Okay here are attempts number two and three:
20170621_200627.jpg
Let me know what you think... :D

#3 is on the right path. The hardest part about drawing at first is letting go of what "we think things look like" and forcing our minds to accept and see what is actually there.

I still have problems with drawing hands and fingers, it's one of my mental blocks 20 years in. Even on my Homer entry, I see his hand and fingers being out of proportion to the rest of it - but I only see it after it's done, not while i'm working on it.

Whew, I thought it was just me. :D

I did see a bit of improvement, from try one to try three, so maybe there is hope for me after all. :D

Thanks for the encouragement and the tips. :D

That is very good advice....the only way to get good at something is to keep trying, funny how I always told and still tell my kids that but I get so frustrated with myself when I can't do something as well as I think I should...

I might just take you up on that and see if I can do better, or at least not worse, on the other two. :D

This is such an awesome idea :) might just have to enter!

We would be very pleased if you did @viazenar! The more the merrier. :) Entries are a bit thin so far this week and I have been extremely busy myself but hope to post something later to get more people involved in the contest.

Good luck to you my friend and have fun....that's what it's all about! :)

That's it! I just wrote a post you might like actually

https://steemit.com/blog/@viazenar/you-don-t-need-to-be-an-artist-to-create-art

I just read it! :)

I will resteem, can I still enter the contest?

Nice idea! Upped and resteemed! Will post soon :)

Thank you @oceansoul13!

We look forward to receiving your entry!

Hope your day is going well! :)

wow! so much positive energy in you! thanks for that too, my day is going perfect :D and i bet yours is too...

:) I do my best @oceansoul! Life is what we make it! :)

true story :D

Been waiting for this, i've always wanted to learn to draw, motivation is key!

If your talent and skill for drawing are anything like your talent and skill at singing and playing music you will soon be a master @yakuhi! Your open mic entries are always excellent my friend!

Hope you are having an awesome day and look forward to receiving your entry! :)

Ha. Damn, maybe I WILL enter this week! I am so low in confidence when it comes to my singing, thanks for the vote of confidence xD I can never find the key...

You have the confidence at least to enter. I think I am a decent wee singer myself but will be a while I think before my confidence levels are high enough to take part! :)

You should enter CrypTalent!! hehe, My entries are usually preceded by me saying, ah fuck it xD

ah fuck it xD

I would love to have this attitude towards life! I'm working on it! :)

I can attribute that to steemit, lol. Just like me drawing the first time, i said, fuck it lol
