Hello, my friends, This a different post from what I usually write. It is about my visit to the local farmer's market, the prices of vegetables and the colorful pictures of fruits and vegetables which I captured while I was shopping. Also, I will do a small contest at the end of this post.
The farmer's market near my house takes place once a week every Friday but every time I forget it and I buy fruits and vegetables from the supermarket or at the grocery store where the prices are very high and the quality of the vegetables is very low with a very poor taste. This Friday I remembered it at the last minute and I went straight to the market.
It was 14.30 when I decided to go for shopping at the flea market and while I was going, I was thinking that I go in vain and that I won't find anything. But when I got there, I realized that not only had a lot of things left to buy but it was still very crowded and the prices were almost half. Below I will show you some pictures of the goods I found there and the prices of them.
Lettuce, fresh onions, arugula, parsley, dill, mint, and many other herbs all at the price of one euro the three pieces. It was very cheap if you consider that one piece costs 0.65 euros in the supermarket, but if I bought them, I would use only one and I would throw away the other two. Fortunately, a lady offered me 3 different pieces at the price of one euro, so I bought one large lettuce, one dill, and a bunch of spring onions, all of them at the price of one euro.
Cherries are one of my favorite fruits. They are so delicious that I can eat up to half a kilo if I start eating them. The price of the two euros you see in the picture is degrading if you consider that last week I bought them for 9 euros per kilo at the grocery store. I bought some, although a little later I found them for one and a half euros per kilo.
Apricots and peaches are also fruits that I like to eat and although I don't remember exactly how much they usually cost, 0.98 per kilo I consider that it is a very good price. On the label of the photo of the apricots is written: exquisite apricots, very sweet aromas and at the label of peaches: peaches, honey and aromas.
In supermarkets, the eggs are sold from 1.5 to 3 euros per pack containing 6 eggs. Here, however, they sell them 0.10 and 0.15 per egg, depending on the quality. The first time I bought eggs at the price of 0.10 euros, I thought that they would be stale and that they would smell bad, but in the end, they are fresh and even two weeks later they remain fresh and the egg white does not easily stand out from the yolk, a sign that their quality is very good. I bought a package of 30 eggs at the price of 3 euros.
I don't remember exactly how much the carrots cost because they are usually very cheap, 1.50 euros that they were sold that day, I think is an average price. Cabbage was at 0.79 per kilo which is also a very reasonable price as with a whole cabbage that costs about 2 euros you can make about 5-6 salads. I bought only some carrots.
Cherry tomatoes are a vegetable that I really like. I use them in pasta, omelets and in many other foods. I also like to eat them raw. One and a half euros per kilo was a very good price and I got some. Furthermore, regular tomatoes were sold at the price of 1 euro for two kilos, and in the supermarkets, they sell them for 1.50 euros per kilo. I got some of them as well because I use them a lot in my cooking and for greek salads.
Onions at the price of 0.99 cents per kilo which is an average price and melons were sold at the price of 2 euro for 3 small pieces. The watermelon price was 0.75 per kilo. Despite the cheap prices, I didn't buy any of them cause I think it is too early. I will buy them when their season will come.
Fresh beans at a very good price. This bench was selling 2 different varieties called Barbounia Beans and Chaulia Beans. The first one was at the price of 1.98 euros per kilo and the second at the price of 1.50. I think that the price depends on the demand of the beans because the most expensive were very few. On the label of both of them, it is written without threads
Peppers in various colors and shapes also at very cheap prices. The red peppers are sold in the supermarket for 3.5-4 euros and here you can find them for 1.48 euros per kilo. The greens cost 2.50 euros in the supermarket and here you find them for 1.48 euros per kilo. Finally, the simple peppers are sold for only 0.80 euros per kilo.
artichokes are a terrific meze that you can eat raw with a little lemon and salt or you can cook them with beans which is also very tasty food. Their price was 4 euros for the 10 pieces which are an average price for their purchase.
Flowers which we can decorate our house, offer to our beloved persons and generally make us feell good, they are also in very reasonable prices. If you visit a flower shop you will pay the triple money and the flowers will die sooner or later.

Awesome! Looks like a great bargain, and definitely better quality then supermarket. My guess is 20.20€
The quality of the groceries is way better than supermarkets and of course the prices are better cause you buy directly from the producers. Thanks for participating! Good luck!

I won't participate to the contest, but encouraging local farmers and local companies is the right thing to do. We buy mostly everything (food-wise) at local markets for many years, except maybe for a few things we cannot find there. We hence eat mostly local food (low pollution levels associated with transport), product that are picked when ready to be eaten, etc... It is all good on all aspects.
Price-wise, it is a bit more expensive than in supermarkets in France. But fine. We eat a bit less, but better quality products (we target either organic food, or food from the so-called reasonable agriculture; we moreover restrain ourselves from buying anything coming from far away).
I totally agree with you. We all need to support local producers because they offer us quality products at much lower prices than the big supermarkets which unfortunately are not so easy to compete with.
Unfortunately, the prices of organic products are unapproachable for most of us here in Greece, so we compromise with the groceries of the farmers market which prices are very low but they are not organic. Furthermore, some of us who live in the countryside, plant our own groceries which is the ideal thing because we know exactly what we eat. Thanks for your comment :)
I agree with this: it is more important to be local than organic. This is better on all aspects!
That's actually our goal. We are preparing things, not for this year as we are too late, but for next year.
