Measuring Tips for Baking and Cooking

in #cooking7 years ago

Hey everyone today I will be doing a quick post on cooking recipes and tips to follow when using measurements. For certain dishes, a splash of this and a hint of this is not a problem. However, if you are baking something or making something more complex like brewing your own, you will find out that measurements are VERY important. Having all of your ingredients measured out before you start cooking will make your job much easier and it will make you look like a pro. When it comes to measuring, you have to consider dry ingredients and liquid ingredients. There are also scales that can be used if you are measuring by grams or pounds. Lets get to the tips.

Dry Ingredients: If you want to measure dry ingredients like a pro then you will need a dry measuring cup. Dry ingredients are things such as flour and sugar. If you are using any type of flour, it is recommended to stir the flour a couple of times before spooning it into a measuring cup. Once you have the flour in your cup, you can then use a knife to level off excess flour, leaving you with an exact measurement. You can also weigh for accuracy to make sure that your "cup" is in fact one cup. 1 cup of all-purpose flour weights 4.25 ounces. If have a scale, use that weight if it's specified for in a recipe

Liquid Ingredients: Use a liquid measuring cup for liquids. Once example would be a "Pyrex" measuring cup. Place your measuring cup on your flat work surface, and bend down while you pour until you hit the exact line that your measurement requires. Check the meniscus, the surface curvature of a liquid when it's in a container. If the meniscus bottom lies at the target marking, you are at the magic spot.

Digital Measurements: Every once in awhile it is a good idea to check the accuracy of your digital scale. To do this, all you need is a shiny new penny or nickel. One penny should weigh 2.5 grams (or 3 grams if the scale cannot register 0.5 grams). One nickel weighs 5 grams.

Well there you have it. Some easy tips to follow to help improve your cooking and baking. Thanks for stopping by and I will see you again soon.

Cool. Thanks for sharing.

A digital scale has saved my butt so many times!! If anyone reading this doesn't use one of these yet you totally should!

Baking is a science and if you use dry measuring cups to measure liquids your dish won't turn out. Everything needs to be measured perfectly in order to get baking right!

Great advice right there! Thanks for sharing!
