Wanted to gain some info on the rights relating to intellectual property/ copyrights for any work I may share on steemit?
Also wanted to know what protection is in place already to safeguard any content that is shared on this space.

Copyright exists in law in local juristictions, like any other online space you would have to excercise any rights in local legal systems.
Steemit does not claim your copyright, so you retain it.
Im not a lawyer, but AFAIK thats the long and short of it.
