Are you wondering what is the age of the Universe or Cosmos? The Universe, also known as the cosmos is made of many different stars, blackholes, nebula, quasars, planets, time, space, gravity, galaxies, all the atoms, and even life. You may be wondering how old is the Universe and some popular objects in the Universe. In this article, I will be going over the age of the cosmos.

List Of Cosmic Object Ages Covered:

  • Age Of The Universe
  • Age Of Time
  • How Old Is Energy?
  • How Old Is The Cosmic Microwave Background?
  • Age Of Atoms
  • How Old Is The Oldest Star?
  • When Did The First Star Appear In The Universe?
  • Milky Way Galaxy Age
  • Age Of The Universe
13.7 billion years old (13,700,000,000 years old)
According to science, the Cosmos or Universe started in a big bang approximately 13.7 billion years ago. This container for all the stars and galaxies is a vast place.
  • Age Of Time
13.7 billion years old (13,700,000,000 years old)
As far as humankind is aware the Cosmos's beginning and time began at the point of the Big Bang. We can say that time is considered to have started at the moment of the Big Bang event.
  • How Old Is Energy?
13.7 billion years old (13,700,000,000 years old)
If we consider that energy was present at the start of the Big Bang, we have a time of 13.7 billion years old.
  • How Old Is The Cosmic Microwave Background?
13.7 billion years old (13,699,600,000 years old)
At the start of the Universe, this Big Bang has left a remnant from the beginning of the Big Bang which happened 400,000 years after the start of the Universe.

  • Age Of Atoms
13.7 billion years old (13,699,600,000 years old)
The beginning of the Big Bang event had seen pure energy cooling down to form the building blocks of atoms - quarks, gluons, leptons as they are cooled which then began to see the formation of atoms. Though a lot of scientific literature state that the first atoms formed around the start of the Big Bang, I have put this figure factoring in the Cosmic Background Radiation and time needed for energy to be able to cool down enough to begin forming atoms.

The oldest atom is Hydrogen and Helium. For the rest of the atoms, such as the carbon that makes up our bodies and plants, we need to wait a bit longer! This would make the oldest Hydrogen and Helium atoms about 13 billion, 699 million, and 600 thousand years old!

Some simulations have also found that there were trace amounts of lithium.

  • When Did The First Star Appear In The Universe?
13.7 billion years old (13,200,000,000 years old)
The first stars to illuminate the Universe began about 500 million years after the Big Bang event, though some newer studies show as early as 180 million years after the Big Bang event.

These stars a simulated study found that early stars likely lasted only 1 million years and provided other atoms such as oxygen, carbon, oxygen and other elements.

Observed light shows us that the oldest stars are 13.2 billion years old. However it is important to note that this does not correspond with the current age of the stars in the early Universe. A reason for this is that even light has its limits and so takes time for that light to reach us. If the star was not there, we would not know about it for a very long time.

  • Milky Way Galaxy Age
13.51 billion years old (13,510,000,000 years old)
The Cosmos has many stars collected in different shaped collection of stars, one of those is the Milky Way Galaxy that houses our Solar System, the Sun, and Earth where we reside. The Milky Way galaxy is approximately 13.51 billion years old.

  • How Old Is The Andromeda Galaxy?
10.1 billion years old (10,100,000,000 years old)
The Andromeda Galaxy is about 10.01 billion years old.

  • How Old Is Pleiades?
100 million years old (100,000,000 years old)
Pleiades is approximately 100 million years old, having formed approximately 100 million years ago and is made up of a cluster of stars is newer than our star, the Sun.
