I imagine it's (slightly) easier to cope with things in the West, as liberties and civic participation are part of their cherished traditions. In Singapore, we have conformity and authoritarianism. I have to stand against the very culture of my country.

Very true, though liberties have been squeezed so gradually, the majority likely haven't even noticed how much we've lost over the past many decades.
