WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU PLANT A CARROT?

in #creative6 years ago

If you plant carrot seeds, you get carrots... so if you plant carrots, then you'll get carrot seeds, right?

Well, that's the hunch I had so seven months ago I did just that, and planted some carrots.

Yes, I did not just planting carrot seeds, but entire carrots. You see, carrots are a type of plant that will go to seed the second year, if allowed to overwinter in the soil. Therefore, by actually planting an entire carrot, it was my belief that it would sprout up and go to seed in the spring. It started as a hunch, but now I know that it actually works!!!

YOU CAN PLANT CARROTS FROM THE STORE TO GET CARROT SEEDS!!!

In your post from 7 months ago I mentioned how there were some carrots still left that I did not pull up. Well I was hoping to have similar success as you did...however not a single one did anything. But seeing your success, I might just have to try again this year!

The video was awesome. Too bad only one of them survived.

One is still a success, so I'll take it! Glad that you enjoyed it!

So fun! This totally rocks! Going to jump right into the video & check this out!! 🥕🥕🥕

LOL - Thanks much! It was very, very interesting!!!!

I do this all the time. You can cut the top off the carrot leaving an inch or 2 of carrot left with the greenery, plant it, and it will grow. Works for lettuce as well.

Onions do too.

The next thing to learn is which are boy carrots and which are girl carrots.
You don't need many boy carrots, and you get your seeds from all the girl carrots.

Thanks for shrimp this....I am going to try this :)

Nice! I want to try and save some seed from my Kyoto red carrots this way.

Keep that carrot chain going!
Most root veggies you can plop in the ground and get something.
I hope it's the purple one...Those guys are cool!

You now have a lifetimes supply of seeds.
It would be one way to get a particular breed of carrot that the seeds are unavailable.

That's awesome! I had forgotten about that, but I'm glad to hear it worked. Now you'll have even more seeds, and hopefully those will be even more effective at making more carrots.

I've done this before on a variety that I got from a market and totally loved. It was even half eaten when I planted it and it worked well for us! :)

Hey @papa-pepper do you happen to know of any other 2 year seed crops. Im a newer gardener and usually let the first year crop go to seed so that i have healthy seeds that are acclimatized for the next year. i would hate to pull something that could go to seed a second year in the ground. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Now that's what you call thinking outside the box! With our crazy summers, some of our carrots bolt in the first year, so I just let the odd ones go and harvest the others, enjoying both harvests. I've featured this video in the Homesteading - Living Naturally newsletter
