Shooting the Chair Workout Video

I felt like writting a short post about the Work Workout Con Catalina shooting process.

First off, a big shout out to Mariana Tayler's flawless performance as Catalina. She could actually start her own chair workout show! Plus, I am grateful for all the participants, they where perfect.

That short video was part of a scene in a short film of mine called Nocturnal Excursion. The film cost me a good amount of money to make, one reason being it was shot on Super 16mm film.

Now, the whole process of actually making the film, from A to Z, was an awesome experience. I really enjoyed making a film in an "official" setting, with many people involved. There is something beautiful about putting so much effort, time and money in turning a script into a film.

We shot the chair workout on a Canon 5D Mark II and created it's retro look in post-production. This video kind of felt like a side project, that played a part in the bigger picture. The goal was to create a cheap, shitty, 80s type, Spanish speaking workout video. Let me say that to be allowed to make something intentionally bad, with friends, was such a delicious and childlike experience.

This short experience made me remember why I got into film making in the first place. As a kid, I just had fun with it. I just did it. Years later, I realize that the best way to create is to do it from that joy of simply doing it and mix it with the skills and knowledge acquired over the years. Maybe obvious to some, but seemingly forgotten by a few of us.

I like when things are very well done, and I always strive to do that, but if it destroys the joy of actually creating, then what is the fucking point of doing it?

Do it well and enjoy the ride.

Thank you for reading. | Merci de m'avoir lu.

This is my new mantra. My motto. My Pokemon theme song. A tattoo in white ink.
