RE: How long do you think you could survive in a cabin in the mountains, 100 miles from anybody else, if you started in winter?

I answered
Days

I suppose it could be weeks...but over the years both here and abroad I’ve lived alone without a car or bicycle, with no telephone, no computer, no central heat (only one small space heater), no AC, (a ceiling fan), no TV (a radio), no hot water (a stove to heat water), very few lights, no bathtub or shower (only a toilet in the hallway), no fridge, and no laundry facilities. (And in the country in Virginia we heated our home with an Ashley wood stove, which worked great except I wouldn’t want to have to chop wood for heat.) But in all those circumstances I had easy access to food each day. So, I know I can do without a lot of worldly comforts but I still need to eat, and being isolated alone in the dead of winter could eventually make that difficult.
