These major financial institutions will not be buying the actual cryptocurrencies, instead they have and will continue to buy into the blockchain protocols and/or infrastructure that supports the industry. Until adoption increases they will not hold stakes into the assets created other than some of the trading desks they are currently creating. Also, it is really not fair to compare these institutions yet to Crypto exchanges. For sure, exchanges are more profitable but the major banks are so diversified that they create billions in revenues they can leverage to compete. DB had over $27 billion in revenue in 2017 because of the many businesses they have. They can buy Binance if they wanted (sorry, but its the truth).
