Once upon a time, I, Chuang Chou, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Chou. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man. Between a man and a butterfly there is necessarily a distinction. The transition is called the transformation of material things.
- Zhuangzi (莊子)
Orichalcos, a decentralized platform for managing digital assets, created by a man who quotes Zhuangzi in his white paper … yes, I can definitely recommend this project.
Now, to get down to the brass tax.
Founded by Sungho Kim, Orichalcos (read their whitepaper here)is an attempt to even the playing field for gamers across the world. Currently the video game market place is dominated by large scale development studios who sell games for “relatively” high prices while profiting additionally off of game play data.. Most “users” (gamers) are not aware of this, but the countless hours they log grinding out that next achievement, is actually generating valuable metadata. Orichalcos offers an alternative to this traditional system by tokenizing their gaming economy and incentivizing various user behaviors. Additionally, systems will be in place that allow users to buy and sell games, in game items and even mods using the Oric Stone token (Orichalcos’ in house token). This allows gamers, and dev’s alike, much more versatility and control over how they enjoy their gaming experiences.
Video Games and Blockchain
Applying Blockchain technology to the video game industry is not a new idea. Blockchain based games (Spells of Genesis, Blockchain Game, Alien Run) and Blockchain gaming platforms that allow for the hosting, development and distribution in game items (WAX, Open Sea, Rarebits), have been around for years. With the advent of “smart contracts” and programmable tokens came a deluge of new platforms aimed to “revolutionize” the way that we experience and enjoy video games. While high level games have yet to be realized on Blockchain platforms, there are many alpha and beta options showing the versatility and value generated through the incentivisation of various user behaviors through tokenization.
Kim, a gamer at heart, launched the Orichalcos platform as a way to redistribute valuable metadata that users automatically generate while gaming. EA Games, the most hated company on the internet, has shown us time and time again how valuable micro transactions can be for game developers, and how powerful a group of incensed, pre-pubescent teenagers can become when you limit their ability to "pwn noobs" and "get sweet skins and stuff". Orichalcos aims to solve some of these problems by properly incentivizing various user behaviors such as earning Oric Tokens for sharing metadata and by creating on-platform marketplaces while supplying developers “big data” packets. When done properly, micro-transactions earned by end users can cause a shift in overall user behavior leading to a result that we all want : a better gaming experience.
Orichalcos is not the only Blockchain based project hoping to profit off of the convergence of an ever expanding Esports industry and the expansion of Blockchain technologies. Kim and his team have shown diligence in passion in creating their well thought out whitepaper while expanding their media presence. They are currently working towards a public ICO where they will surely gain traction in the highly active ICO marketplace. With ambitious goals, and a strong team, Orichalcos surely has a wonderful chance at becoming a stable cryptocurrency and a highly beneficial platform for gamers around the world.
