Update 2: "119,756 BTC STOLEN"

The Bitfinex website has been taken offline!

OFFICIAL STATMENT FROM BITFINEX

Security breach on Bitfinex

Today we discovered a security breach that requires us to halt all trading on Bitfinex, as well as halt all digital token deposits to and withdrawals from Bitfinex.

We are investigating the breach to determine what happened, but we know that some of our users have had their bitcoins stolen. We are undertaking a review to determine which users have been affected by the breach. While we conduct this initial investigation and secure our environment, bitfinex.com will be taken down and the maintenance page will be left up.

The theft is being reported to — and we are co-operating with — law enforcement.

As we account for individualized customer losses, we may need to settle open margin positions, associated financing, and/or collateral affected by the breach. Any settlements will be at the current market prices as of 18:00 UTC. We are taking this necessary accounting step to normalize account balances with the objective of resuming operations. We will look at various options to address customer losses later in the investigation. While we are halting all operations at this time, we can confirm that the breach was limited to bitcoin wallets; the other digital tokens traded on Bitfinex are unaffected.

We will post updates as and when appropriate on our status page, bitfinex.statuspage.io. We are deeply concerned about this issue and we are committing every resource to try to resolve it. We ask for the community’s patience as we unravel the causes and consequences of this breach.

Coincidentally I reported a bug to bitfinex about a week ago and removed most if not all my funds if I can remember correctly.

I do hope these guys get this resolved. They were one to the TOP bitcoin Exchanges

WOW

to be honest.. the more I see these the more I like my money being tied up in something that would take 2 years to fully lose

This could cause a major crash in the BTC price due to it being such a big exchange. I hope it turns out to be a minor thing so we can get a quick recovery. The last thing we need right now is more turmoil.

@thecryptofiend It did cause a major BTC price crash. I just finished posting pictures on Steemit in crypto-news of exactly how bad the damage was on both Poloniex and Coindesk. Today was a bad day for Bitcoin....

Here's a link to the post with pictures of the price graphs :

"we may need to settle open margin positions"

Lol rekt. Sorry for any affected by this truly. Decentralized exchanges are the future.

They talk about 125K BTC stolen. No wonder the BTC price is going down... And the Chinese will wake up in a few hours.

is this the main reason behind BTC fall????

Well, certainly sir, I must say so it must be eerrhemm.

better try a decentralized exchange
e.g. OpenLedger

Cryptocurrency, like any other financial apparatus, is a target for cybercriminals. The difference is, criminals from anywhere can take a swing at these virtual currencies. It is imperative that security controls be designed into these systems, tested, and kept current with best practices. Secondly, every cryptocurrency organization MUST have a response plan. Be prepared for the inevitable. Such plans tend to reduce the overall impact, downtime, and erosion of customer confidence. Think ahead.

I hope our own Steemit Dev’s have such thinking, plans, and cybersecurity advisors to help them protect the assets, reputation, and availability of the Steemit community and content.

Holyshit this is huge. Is my BTC safe in Kraken?
Worrying times for a lot of Bitcoiners.

This is the 24 hour chart.

BTC price nose diving. This is not good for Bitcoin or crypto in general.

I saw bitcoin drop under 600 on coinmarketcap earlier and checked again and wowza. Just saw that Bitfinex was hacked, not a good day for BTC. It will rebound like it always does, we have seen worse. I hope everyone recovers their funds.

BitGo BitGo tweeted @ 02 Aug 2016 - 23:54 UTC

As we directly notified our customers earlier today, our investigation has found no evidence of a breach to any BitGo servers.

Any news on if Bitfinex going to reimburse the customers? That is over 75 millions USD.
