I just wanted to give a brief warning to everyone that MyEtherWallet (MEW) had a DNS hack today, as described here:
Note that they have not given the green light that everything is perfect yet, but according to some reddit updates (I haven't confirmed, but the cointelegraph article above points it out), Google's Public DNS papers to be resolving to the correct ISP for it.
$150k has been stolen, so be very cautious right now when trying to access funds via the site https://myetherwallet.com. Just always be aware of what is going on and if you are tech savvy look to make sure that the certificate is valid for the site when you visit it. Also, if possible, hold off on using it for the next day or a few days just to be safe.
I want to be very clear that MY WALLET hasn't been hacked. It was https://myetherwallet.com, a site that provides the ability to create wallets and lets users access and send transactions from their wallets, that was hacked. I WASN'T affected by this. :)
Hi biddle,
Good to see you were not affected by this Hack.
Fortunately, I took out everything from MY Wallet 3 months ago. So I was safe.
thanks for the update, everyone must make double , triple sure on any site where money/currency is involved that it is secure, have valid certificate, and make sure there is https and not only http in the url.
thanks for the post
It should be more secure with high level security ...becuase since when it becomes popular it is in danger....
It can also be used offline, reducing the risks of hacks and theft.
Don't worry ... be cool .
Just smoothly handle the problem and solve it... Hope that you can access it quickly...@biddle
Thanks for sharing such conscious article.
I'm not using this wallet but i very glad to see you are sharing up this info to give heads up to everybody
Guess I'd soon be withdrawing my funds to a safer location. Am even getting tired of ethereum and it's many flaws.
This is really a serious issue we should play safe games with our wallet
Probably an inside job, thanks for sharing @biddle
definitely a possibility.
Yes, sure is, that's why I don't fancy software wallets, it's just a risk am taking for now
That’s a crazy staff. That’s what everyone is afraid of. Thanks for the warning ⚠️.
I guess hackers find ways to get through no matter what. I used myetherwallet today, but only to check the wallet without any keys, so I'm safe.
Thank you for this post i was thinking to remove few coins from there after the last few days i assume this is a sing to wait and hold..
It's so sad. Thanks for informing us. I will obey your advice.
You're very welcome!
So coins been stolen from people? do you know how much?
Yeah, apparently 150 thousand dollars USD.
But the fault isn't from the users end. There's no way the first affected persons would have known.
Hope they would reimburse the affected users, though I highly doubt it, not with all the warnings on their site
This is the second time today I learned about this attack.
Thanks for sharing.
Keep on steemin'
Thanks for the information.
Yeah its better to stay away from using MEW until the whole DNS ordeal gets fixed.
I don't trust using those browser wallets.
I'm a pretty new person in the crypto world, but I've heard numerous times that the best thing to hold crypto is either hardware wallet or a paper wallet.
Atleast to use a desktop wallet.
I'm so glad that I made a small invesment and bought Ledger Nano S.
I feel so much safer with it.
I know that my cryptos are safe.
Was just about to login with mew, thanks @biddle. I'd be using metamask for now
You're very welcome! :)
Thanks again, how do you get updates from the mew team? Which social media are they active on
https://twitter.com/myetherwallet is a good one! :)
Thanks, I'd be checking on then often
No doubt the crypto market would have taken a hit
Oh, it's really unfortunate to see these increased rates of hacks and scams, and thanks for this update. This awareness spreading post is really appreciable. Wishing you an great day. Stay blessed.
Good post, despite not knowing much about technology, since these issues are taken care of by my daughter, I will pass on this information so that she is pending. Thanks for sharing.
I invite you to visit my profile, when you can. Thank you.
Thanks, looks like I'd be holding off transacting for some days
Good call, to be safe. If you find yourself having to make transactions in the meantime, I'd recommend a different site/method! :)
I can recommend using metamask for now, it's a desktop brower plugin ( Firefox , opera and chrome) just be sure you get the right one from the plugin stores. With plenty reviews and downloads. Also read the comments. 😀
Yeah, as @amylane mentions, MetaMask can be useful right now for that! :)
Yes you're very right, can you recommend any other site that simplifies the process/interface like mew
This is the second time today I learned about this attack.
Thanks for sharing
$150k has been stolen😱😰 OMG huge amount. this such a swear issue should know everyone about it 😱😰. I would like to request everybody resteem this post more and more people know about this. @biddle how to handle?
Hey @xawi, resteeming and spreading the word is awesome! and as far as handling it, I would stay off of https://myetherwallet for at least the next day (although it looks like the problems are resolved now, but better safe than sorry) and use an alternative method of accessing your wallet such as MetaMask! :)
Exactly @biddle it's better safe than sorry. And good to know that issue is resolved now but still should be cautious
Thanks for the update.
Be cool and handle it meticulously, things will return to normalcy.
oho this is a serious issue, every one should be alert ..
thanks for alerting us
Great post sir.
Its really very informative post.
Very well articulated.
Nice content.
It's so important to know about the hacks.
And the best part is we can use it offline and this reduces the risks of hacks.
Thanks @biddle sir for sharing this post.
Upvoted + resteemed your post.
Oh my God! whats terrible happened with myetherwallet. Thanks for the awareness.... should be solve this issue very fast as they have many users.
I am shocked to hear that your wallet have been hacked. Is there not any option to recover your wallet?
Hi @charliechain, I want to be very clear that MY WALLET hasn't been hacked. It was https://myetherwallet.com, a site that provides the ability to create wallets and lets users access and send transactions from their wallets, that was hacked. I WASN'T affected by this. :)
