Filecoin is the much-anticipated cryptocurrency that aims to power a distributed file storage system - blockchain cloud storage. The project is headed by Juan Benet, highly experienced and well respected founder of Protocol Labs.
Filecoin (FIL) had the 2nd most successful ICO in September of 2017, generating $252M!!!
Filecoin has also been profiled in the Wall Street Journal. James Altucher writes: "Filecoin" has an implicit contract that whoever owns a file coin is also allowing (by the contract embedded in the coin) that people can share files on that coin. It creates a decentralized dropbox. Cryptocurrencies can be used now to replace escrows, wills, and many other types of basic contracts. The entire field of contract law is a $400 billion market or more and will be completely replaced (and lead to the rise of) by legitimate cryptocurrencies.
Several prominent VC's are backing Filecoin (FIL) - Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Winklevoss Capital, Y Combinator.
They are seeking early miners until the project is completed. I have applied, I hope you do too. Good luck!

Interestingly SIA coin is up and running doing something very very similar. I don't like the fact that 30% of the coins are locked up from the get go which feels less decentralized then SC coin
