What is CoinMarketCap and how do you use it to its full potential ?

in #crypto4 years ago

CoinMarketCap (CMC) has been a reliable source for crypto assets information since 2013. When the website launched, only 7 cryptocurrencies were listed and one Bitcoin was only worth $135.58. Now one Bitcoin price is worth $10200 and there are more than 3000+ different types of coins and tokens are in circulation.
Through the use of API’s, CMC has been able to continuously provide up-to-date information about the total value of the crypto market, current prices of cryptocurrencies, trade volumes and much more.
For those who have never used CMC and haven’t used to it’s fullest, this blog post will help you get the most out of their service.

Home page of CoinMarketCap

The website automatically ranks cryptocurrencies based on their market cap, which is the total (in this case US Dollar) value of a crypto. You can click the USD box (near the “Filters” tab) to select the currency you would like to see cryptocurrencies denominated in.
“Exchanges” tab will open a new page where CMC will list all the exchanges that has been listed where we can filter top exchanges by volume, traffic, confidence factor.

Back to home page, You can also see the current price of each coin and the trading volumes of the last 24 hours.
Next to the “% Change (24h)” column, we can see a simple graph of the price movement of a coin over the last 7 days.
You can also see the circulating supply of a coin. This is always important to take into account because this supply helps to determine the price of a cryptocurrency. It explains why XRP is so cheap while Monero is more expensive with a significantly lower market capitalization.
CMC automatically displays 100 cryptocurrencies per page and you can use the buttons on the top right to skip to the next 100 or view all coins.
If you’re looking for the stats on a specific coin, just type the name of the coin in the search bar or click on the coin name from homepage.

I chose Tezos coin. Here you can see all data regarding Tezos(XTZ). On the bottom of the picture you can see,
Chart tab can be used to linear/log scale chart representation of Market cap, Price, 24 hr volume.
Tezos Return Of Investment, Market Rank, Market Cap, 24 Hour Volume, Circulating Supply, Total Supply, Max Supply can also be seen. It also includes All Time, 52 Weeks, 90 days, 30 days, 24 Hrs, Yesterday’s (High/Low)
Yesterday’s Open / Close, Yesterday’s Change can also been seen in this tab
Market Pairs tab can be used to see all other tokens that is paired with Tezos in exchanges. Price change, exchange link for that particular pair, confidence factor, volume, liquidity can be found in this tab.
Likewise Social tab for getting News related to tezos from reddit, twitter or any other social platform.
Tools tab for developers/bloggers who want particular coin ticker price on their site. They can get the Javascript code to implement on their site
You can explore historical data for that coin, News about that coin on internet, and much more can be consumed from a coin page
Example of how I utilize Market pairs tab

Market pairs tab
Personally I don’t keep eye on all exchanges and sometimes it is time-consuming to compare market pairs on various exchanges. I try to analyse market trends and order books of that particular pair to forecast the price.
In this example I took Litecoin as a base currency and filtered all others except ETH. Now the page will load up data only for LTC/ETH pair. Under the column “Pair”, you can see exchanges name in parallel with LTC/ETH pair. Just click on them and CMC will redirect you to that trading pair page of those exchanges.
If you click LTC/ETH of Coinsbit, it will land you in Coinsbit trading page where you can see recent market activity of LTC/ETH pair.
You can’t keep an eye. But you can keep multiple tabs on chrome ;)
Differentiate Coins and Tokens
Digital coin is an asset that is native to its own blockchain. Think about Bitcoin, Litecoin, or Ether. Each of these coins exists on their own blockchain.
Bitcoin operates and functions on the Bitcoin blockchain
Waves operates and functions on the Waves blockchain
Coins only page can be found at https://coinmarketcap.com/coins/
Tokens are created on existing blockchains. For example tokens that are built on the Ethereum platform are known as ERC-20 tokens.

Pump n Dump Detection

Detecting Pump using price change option
You can click “change (24h)” to see which coin price has soared high and low. This can be used to detect which coin has lost its value and which coins have gained value for a while. In this Nexo, Loopring, Zilliqa, Vechain and Neo are top coins whose prices have soared high in past 24 hrs.

Detecting dump
In this Flexacoin, Unibright, Enjin coin, Status, Blockstack are top coins whose price have been dumped in past 24 hrs.
