Steemit is brilliant in that you can control your private keys. Controlling private keys establishes ownership. Cryptos held on an exchange are ledger entries. My EOS is currently held on an exchange. I am going to change this very soon. 
I currently keep my non-steem cryptos on a Trezor wallet. From what I have read, Trezor does not yet support EOS. I will convert my EOS to a coin supported by my Trezor and store them off of an exchange.
I am hoping more practical wallets will be available soon.
