The least valuable Bitcoin spawn: the six most ridiculous altcoins
While Bitcoin can be the grandfather of digital currencies, it has generated hundreds of alternatives. Some of them come close to challenging Bitcoin, like Ethereum, and some have applications and settings in the real world, such as Ripple, Litecoin, and Dash.
However, the rise of the ICO has extended to the ridiculous and the absurd, giving birth to a large number of coins that are a parody, a joke or simply meaningless. However, the nature of ICOs and the exaggeration of anything related to Blockchain has seen some of these ridiculous coins accumulate a fair amount of value.
Dogecoin.
One of the most famous "nonsense" coins, Dogecoin is a meme coin based on doge, the Shiba Inu dog.
Originally it was conceived as a joke: it combined digital memes and digital currencies. However, people living on the concept of it skyrocketed shortly after launch, reaching a market limit of $ 130 million.
Dogecoin was created by Jackson Palmer, a group product manager at Adobe, and Billy Markus, a software engineer at IBM, "without much real thought."
WhopperCoin.
WhopperCoin was launched almost recently, and was touted as proof that digital currencies were spreading to the mainstream, as Russia's Burger King decided to use Blockchain for its loyalty program. Every time a client spends a ruble, he would receive a WhopperCoin. Once accumulated 1,700 coins, they could be exchanged for a hamburger. Head of external communications at Burger King Russia, Ivan Shestov, said:
"Now Whopper is not just [a] hamburger that people in 90 different countries love, it's also an investment tool." Ivan Shestov
PotCoin.
Potcoin had legitimate reasons to exist, helping to move the marijuana industry, which operates between legal and illegal in different spaces, to a more global space.
The idea was that PotCoin could be used to facilitate transactions within the cannabis industry. PotCoin was the original, but since then more digital coins have entered the space.
Unobtanium.
Fans of the movie Avatar may be familiar with the premise on which Unobtanium is based, as it was inspired by the rare mineral Blockbuster Hollywood. Unobtanium was destined to be the rarest cryptocurrency in the world. Only 250,000 coins (ONE) will be extracted during the next 300 years.
Its current market capitalization amounts to $ 11 million.
Coinye.
A true parody coin, Coinye was known as Coinye West, designed after the famous rapper, Kanye West. The cryptocurrency closed quickly in 2014 after West filed a cease and desist order, suing a large group of defendants for unspecified damages.
The lawsuit caused the coin developers to change the appearance of the coin logo to an even less flattering image of the rapper by designing it in West's interpretation of South Park.
Putin Coin.
The famous and enigmatic Russian President has spawned a follow-up that extends to digital coin creators. Putin Coin has only existed since 2016, but has managed to reach a market limit of $ 2.5 million.
