In a press release today March 26, 2018, Coinbase announces its intention to support the Ethereum ERC20 tokens.
Here is the most important translation:
Adding ERC20 support to CoinbaseWe are pleased to announce our intention to support Ethereum ERC20 technical standard for Coinbase in the coming months. This opens the door to supporting ERC20 assets across all Coinbase products in the future, although we are not announcing support for specific assets or features at this time. We announce this at the same time internally and to the public in accordance with our process of adding new assets.
ERC20 is a technical standard used for Ethereum smart contracts. ERC20 assets have become a popular way for teams to quickly build contracts and interoperable assets (note: especially for ICOs). More recently, our Ethereum portfolio and our browser Dapp Toshi have added native support for ERC20.
GDAX (the Coinbase related trading place): The GDAX team will wait for further regulatory clarity before deciding which ERC20 assets to support by GDAX. Support for ERC20 will also allow us to securely recover the assets of ERC20 clients inadvertently sent to GDAX Ethereum addresses.

Coinbase : according to our previous guidelinesCoinbase will only list assets once they are listed on GDAX. After evaluating factors such as liquidity, price stability and other market health measures, we can choose to add any ERC20 assets added to GDAX to the Coinbase platform. It is also worth repeating that GDAX will probably have more assets registered on the platform than the Coinbase platform, that is to say that the registration on GDAX does not guarantee the registration on Coinbase.
In addition, like GDAX, support for ERC20 will allow us to securely recover the assets of ERC20 clients inadvertently sent to the Ethereum addresses of Coinbase.

This is great news for those who participate in airdops myEtherWallet is filled with 16 ERC20 coins i've received for signing up to airdrops but finding exchanges to offload these tokens is a pain.
If coinbase does add Er20 compatibilty we'll be able to easily cash in on airdrops and ICO allocations :)
