Can you send me your portfolio?

If you’re a writer that’s hungry for gigs,

Then the best approach should be to send out your portfolio to as many prospective clients as possible, right?

Unfortunately the fact of the matter,

Is that people rarely will sift through the massive amounts or even little bit of material that you have..

The even graver truth is that most likely,

They won’t even care or be motivated enough to click your portfolio link..

For those that generally are interested,

And request you to send them your portfolio it can also work against you..

Coming from my own personal experiences with clients,

And observations within the marketplace here’s what I’ve found..

“Send me your portfolio,”

Does not actually mean what it sounds like..

You see,

This is a common request that most managers or hiring parties do purely out of reflex..

As mentioned in ‘The 3 most annoying questions to avoid with prospective clients’

Most people don’t have the slightest idea of what they are looking for in a writer because they don’t know writing..

So when they ask you to “send me your portfolio,”

If you translate it from English into business speaks here’s what it means:

“Hey (name) we think you might be a good fit to work with us. At the moment, we are comparing you with hundreds of other generic writers, and the one who is the cheapest that can do the most work will win.”

“Effectively, we’re looking for someone who will be our little b*tch and comply with every request, relevant or not, that we ask.”

Aha now we’re getting somewhere..

Once we dig into the context of this translation,

We can deduce that “send me your portfolio” enters you into a type of ‘generic writers beauty pageant’ that has nothing to do with your writing skill at all..

Now why is this exactly?

Well,

It is precisely that your client doesn’t understand the incomprehensible value that you provide with your skill-set..

In actuality,

Without copywriting their businesses are doomed to fail at worst or toil away wasting time with TONS of tedious tasks at best..

When you break it down,

Marketing is totally reliant on you to produce high quality anecdotes promoting their brand, killer converting direct response posts for their offers, and story lines their audience can follow over the long term..

While the sales department,

Is desperate for you to crank out UX/UI copy to facilitate their web experiences, video scripts that hook in and never let go, along with easy to understand educational content that ultimately sells users on their ideas..

Simply put,

The copywriter is the backbone and without it the entire skeleton (business) collapses..

Historically the top agency owners understood this,

Which is why guys like David Ogilvy were able to become unimaginably rich just by scaling this one skill..

However you don’t have to be a copy guru or ‘top dog’ agency owner,

To escape getting sucked into the “send me your portfolio” dialogue that enters you into the ‘generic writers beauty pageant.’
