Crypto malware

in #crypto7 years ago (edited)

!!!UPDATE!!! Thanks to @bwells for pointing out that computing power was being stolen (which is still not a good situation, since the user is unaware), not actual coins and that Coinhive is a legit company. It's great when us fellow steemians inform each other on inaccuracies. Truly appreciated.

Apparently there was a outbreak of crypto-mining malware known as "Coinhive" that has effected more than 55% of the world's businesses. The biggest comapany involved was Youtube. Youtube's parent company, Google, stated that computers were receiving the malware through ads that the hackers placed on the site. The most effect countries were Japan, France, Taiwan, Italy and Spain.

While google and Trend Micro, a cyber security company, have stated the issue has been dealt with, they are still being deliberately private on the extent of the damage.

What do you believe the lasting effects will be? Good for the future of crypto security? Loss of coins in other exchanges like NEM? Let me know in the comments.

Just to clarify, Coinhive is actually a legit company that allows one to mine crypto with their current computer power. One that owns a website can add Coinhive code to make their visitors give up computing power to mine coin as well. They are just supposed to inform them of this if they choose to use it.

The problem is that scammy people are hiding the code and trying to turn other people's computers into miners without them knowing.

Coin isn't being stolen through Malware, but computing power is being stolen to mine coins without the knowledge of certain users.

I would hate to see this be the new norm. I understand it's it's an exchange for goods and services and 3rd party ads are not generating income like they used to but it's like we need Brave Browser or disable all JavaScript to browse the internets.

Thank you for the clarification. I must have misinterpreted the article...or it was misleading. Nevertheless, than you for clarifying @bwells

Yes, the idea is good. Instead of ads, you pay for a website by computing power. The hiding part is the not cool bit.

Another exchange hack is just going to boost the value of decentralized exchanges like 0x and Airswap... So I see an exchange hack possibly helping the future of crypto security because it will bring these decentralized exchanges to light

Almost got me to fomo on 0x ^~^

A bitter truth! Following u dear!

Oh my God, this is indeed a threat to the nearest future. Technology , as good as it is now poses a threat on crypto security. I really dont know how these hackers can be dealt with. God help us all. Thanks @jgullinese for sharing

Dang, I really need to migrate Brave Browser as my primary Browser. Just a shame not every site works with it with shields up or some YouTube videos break.

Thanks for giving us a new message about crypto, hack & so on.We can take out a lot of update information from your post.
Thanks @jgullinese.
Wait for your upcoming post.
