What happened to our internet?

in #crypto7 years ago

My first impression of internet was something free, something progressive, something for all. I thought it was where you can get and spread information, any information without censorship. Where you can meet new people, different people, with different opinions.

The Internet has no centralized governance in either technological implementation or policies for access and usage; each constituent network sets its own policies.

By the time I actually started using internet, it was the age of google and facebook, and the internet I knew had moved to underground. It was called dark web. The internet we know today is censored and manipulated. Information is hidden/personalized. If you search for something, you will most likely get a different set of results.

For example, I go to youtube to watch some random videos. I go there because I want to expand my knowledge of the world but everything is tailored based on my past searches. I don't see anything out of the ordinary and this is not something I can opt out of. Though this may be fine for most people, but I want internet to have less boundaries.

Bitcoin seems so similar to the current state of internet. It was something supposed to be decentralized but now its controlled by few mining pools. Similar to how internet is controlled by a few giants like Comcast and information is censored by companies like google.

So whats the solution?

This problem was recently brought up in hilarious comedy show, Silicon Valley. They proposed the idea of decentralized internet. I liked the idea the moment it was brought up and I didn't understand, why we already don't have that? Isn't that what internet was supposed to be to begin with?

And I am glad BandZ actually acted on the idea. I am sure there will be lot of hurdles but if they succeed, they would have created history. Two most interesting aspects that I am really looking forward two:

Price of domestic internet service.
Price of domestic internet service is ridiculously high in US. Major companies like AT&T and Spectrum has distributed areas of operation and don't complete. This gives them complete monopoly in that area and they can set their own rates. Whatever they feel fine. BandZ promises to fix that issue and I am really interested to see that happen.

Higher accessibility

Accessibility to internet in third world country is really scarce. If we are going to be a world where we only have digital currency, that can't happen without connecting each and every person to internet. Providing internet accessibility to everyone should be the highest priority of crypto world. This is one other thing that BandZ is going to address. If these the things are addressed by this project, I would consider it a success.
