Introduction
The demand for data especially in large size is on the high side since nothing can be done without data. The larger the data size collected about a phenomenon to be investigated, the more reliable the data tends to be. This necessitates the large demand for data. Since development and technology in whatsoever form depends largely on the availability of data that is reliable. And now, the computational storage of the generated or collected data is now a bigger challenge.
There have been different challenges about data acquisition, handling and storage in different organizations and this has closed down different establishments. Generating data or data handling depends greatly on storage. Data must be stored in a form that is accessible and available at all times.
It is no news that individuals, organizations, corporate entities, researchers and government bodies spend a lot on data collection and management but to keep large data is not within everyone grips.
I have a funny scenario to share. During my undergraduate degree research I was in need of meteorological (weather) data collected from an automated weather recording system on an interval of 5 seconds for a period of 30 years concerning weather elements like rainfall, temperature, windspeed, Atmospheric Pressure for my undergraduate research. The data was made available to me freely as a student for research purposes as it was a special privilege for research students. Following my graduation from University, I gave out my laptop to a friend so that he can use it for his research work.
It came to my understanding later that he formatted the laptop to free space on the hard disk. I felt the documents on the laptop are of no much importance, so I let go. Few years later, I decided to put in for Graduate Research for which I need to advance on the work done at the undergraduate level but have lost the data. Because of the large size of the data, the laptop was formatted by someone who did not know the value of the data. It is often said that when the value of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.
I contacted the office that gave me the data, only to be told that following the transition in government, there is now a new policy regarding such data. I was told that people have abused the data they have given out and as such, there is no grace for research students anymore. So anyone in need of data has to buy it on a flat rate even with corporate body. Now I need a data of 50 years for my graduate research program. Therefore, I must pay a certain amount per parameter needed multiply by the number of years needed. The amount in question is something I cannot afford. I should have 30 years data if i had a safe place where I could keep the one given to me before the new policy came up.
Without data there is no research. And research is the backbone of technology, invention and innovation of any type. Different sectors of human endeavour have witnessed a great transformation over the past few years. This is made possible by data available in large size.
Modern Data Storage
Over the past years to handle the challenges of data management, cloud storage was introduced. So that individual and corporate organizations can have their data where is safe. The usage of this cloud storage have grown greatly over the past few years that it was introduced for which it was accounted that cloud service market providing both storage capacities and computational processing capabilities to companies and to corporate bodies is estimated to be 45 billion USD per annum.
Looking at this value given, there are four notable organizations in control of this cloud service and they are AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft and IBM. Since it is a service that only very few can offer, they set a high pricing standard for the service sweeping an annual profits worth many billions of Dollars each. It is often said that he who holds the economic power will definitely control politics. Therefore, these groups of companies impedes any new market from rising up to compete with them. And they are able to hinder new market because their substantial investments in data centers, servers and storage facilities.
The demand for computational processing capabilities and storage is on the increase everyday and if the market must be free, there is only one thing that can help break the ground and it is decentralization which the blockchain technology provides.
Blockchain, Cloud Service and IAGON
Cloud storage services allow users and companies to store data outside of their local machines. The purpose of cloud computing is to off-load the burden of maintaining local storage services.
