Common crypto abbreviations and terms

Every industry or profession has its own unique terms in its language. The crypto industry isn't an exception, and there are words and acronyms that are commonly used in discussions that new on-boarders may not be familiar with.

Below are some of the most common abbreviations and terms used in crypto trading:

  • BTFD = Buy The F****ng Dip

  • DAO = ‘Decentralised Autonomous Organization’ - an organization that runs automatically without any human interventions through Smart contracts

  • Dapp = ‘Decentralized application’ that relies partly on blockchain for its functionality. It does not need to have a financial function. Dapps can be created using common programming languages like Javascript, PHP, or C#

  • DeFi = ‘Decentralized Finance’- a financial ecosystem consisting of various financial tools, apps, and services utilizing blockchain technology.

  • DEX Decentralized Exchange - an exchange where people can trade cryptocurrencies and tokens without the need for a middleman

  • DYOR = Do Your Own Research

  • FA = Fundamental Analysis

  • FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out

  • FUD = Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt

  • HODL = Hold/Hold a position

  • MCAP = Market Capitalization

  • NFT = Non-fungible token - a token representing a unique asset, either digital or real-world assets.

  • OTC = Over The Counter

  • TA = Technical Analysis

  • Altcoins -> Any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin

  • Bag Holder -> A person who buys and holds low-value coins in large quantity hoping to make good profits in the future.

  • Bear/Bearish -> Negative price movement

  • Bull/Bullish -> Positive price movement

  • DILDO -> Long green or red candles

  • Dump -> To Sell off a coin

  • Long -> Margin bull position

  • Moon -> Continuous upward movement of price

  • Pump -> Upward price movement

  • REKT -> When you have a bad loss

  • Shitcoin -> A coin with little potential value or use

  • Short -> Margin bear position

  • Whale -> Very Wealthy trader/Market mover.

  • Weak Hand -> A coin holder who'll likely sell at the first sign of a dip in price.
