Note I added to the post where I listed all the name ideas, the new ideas Etrinsic, Indieverse, Klik and Munge. You may also want to note in the detailed table, the alternative spellings and domains I was able to register.

Previous name ideas such as Eplanet and, say, Everse connected the E currency to the wider concept of being applied to the planet and “universe”, whereas when the E is removed from Etonomy you’re left with ‘tonomy’, which has no meaning in itself to join with the currency; it relies on an overriding association with desired meaning of "economy" by whoever views it, and unless it is applied to a specific context, it might be associated instead with "thrift" to a casual observer, unless it was combined with a succinct and explanatory strap line I guess.
[…]
It occurred to me today that out of the FANG four, Netflix is I believe the most identifiable name for most people in being self-explanatory of its function. If you had never encountered Apple, Amazon or Google before, their names would not convey their purpose. And Facebook only vaguely; it could be alluding to a photo album, say.
Your frank and correct feedback motivated me to do some more work on the naming ideas.
Etonomy is not the best name to pitch to the masses, because most people don’t think abstractly and search the mental landscape for patterns. They instead associate a word to the most direct linkage within their knowledge. So indeed very few people are apt to associate Etonomy with ‘autonomy’. Instead nearly all will associate it with ‘economy’ and as you noted there are two definitions of economy: thrift and a market-based system. My daughter thought it is about “the science of economy”. Some (simpleton) people may find the word meaningless and vacuous.
However, people are herding creatures and so over time they do learn to associate a word with some meaning according to its usage by others. So for example as you noted, ‘google it’ is by now a verb for an Internet search.
So given the passing of time if the usage of Etonomy strongly imparts features of autonomy, then people may come to naturally associate it with that meaning. However, I doubt that people are ever going to realize that the increased features and degrees-of-freedom they have gained are actually autonomy. Really people don’t make such abstract linkage. Although in this case they have a strong hint to do so, because Etonomy is close to the word autonomy. But there is that primary linkage to economy which may permanently dominate their (pitiful, lol) psyche.
Nevertheless, Etonomy is a brandable name with justifiable meaning that describes the blockchain in a non-technical manner and ties it in with the proposed E cryptocurrency token name. So that met my goal in that respect and is a significant naming epiphany. And I have not been able to think of anything better for the E currency name. The name Everse was weak because of the reasons already stated. Verse doesn’t convey universe or global to all people. Many people think of the actual definition of ‘verse’. So please be objective when comparing Etonomy to Everse. You are ostensibly favoring your preferred meaning of the suffix -verse, but actually the etymology of -verse means “to turn” so only combined with “uni-” is the entire earth (and thus the universe seen from it) turning in unison.
As for the addition of Groove, I quite like it (possibly as Groov?) as a dAPP name. Wasn't it one of the older suggestions, I forget?
Apparently you didn’t note the groov.to
listed in my table as one of the available domain names.
Yes both Groove and Klik are from ideas I discussed as early as 2015. But the spelling with two letter ‘k’s is new for me. Perhaps I have since been influenced by the chat app named Kik which I found out in 2017 is also making a cryptocurrency with a kin
token name.
Although Groove or Klik could be dApps on the Etonomy blockchain, it is possible they might comprise numerous dApps such as blogging, wiki, music, videos, Q & A, etc.. Yet the Etonomy portal would still list dApps from other third parties, even though the Groove and/or Klik dApps might also have plugins created by third parties. And it is possible that we might use both of those names and perhaps the Groove would be focused on music dApp.
The dApps could include a prominent, conspicuous statement, “powered by Etonomy” or “an Etonomy-based dApp”.
However, the Klik idea introduces another option distinct from the option of using Klik as described above. Noticed I also registered klik.cash
. Actually klik
is a good cryptocurrency token name. We could simply name the entire project Klik. Actually the “to harmonize” definition of ‘click’ fits well with the technology I have devised for ameliorating the nothing-at-stake flaw of proof-of-stake. Currently it is nearly impossible to register a good domain name with that spelling, so in the meantime I was able to register klliikk.com
and we-klik.com
(as well as klikr.net
, kliky.org
and klikz.org
). I presume klik.com
(which currently redirects to a different domain, so really not in use) is going to have a very high price tag. Offered for sale are klikz.com
for $50700 and weklik.com
for $8695. Note many users will likely google “klik” to find the correct domain name.
These are good names. I doubt we can do better. I have put a lot of time into thinking about this and I think I am near the end of the search for names. Need to focus on coding.
Note the Munge idea has a meaning which abstractly connects well with the concept of exodata and being able to munge the data in unlimited degrees-of-freedom. And it can be a verb. But I again most people don’t form abstract linkage of concepts. And for them they are more likely to (mis-)associate it with grunge rock music. And w.r.t. to Indieverse although Wikipedia says ‘indie’ is generally applicable to independence, again most people will associate it with independent artists only. As well we have the problem with the actual meaning of ‘verse’ not being associated with universe but with written text.
EDIT: the filipinas here much prefer Klik over Groove. And Etonomy is just nothing for them.
Melanie (the Peruvian girl) likes Escendant the most out of Etonomy, Escendant, and Eplanet.
Interesting. I presume she is a smart lady?
Also she is comparing it to names we have rejected and to the Etonomy name which means nothing to most people. In that context, and presuming she is intelligent, I can understand her choice as justified. Etonomy is something that will grow on people after a while. Hence I don’t think it will work as the main user facing name. It could work as “powered by Etonomy” or “an Etonomy-based dApp” if we opt for such segregration of naming and concepts.
We have to target an audience. The name of the blockchain could be more technical and/or technological in order to gain geek cool appeal. Hence Etonomy which is technical in the sense of referring to economics and permissionless. But Etonomy works less well as the name targeting the masses, although over time it could become more accepted. Hence the idea to use a separate app or website name for targeting the masses. Although we could optionally choose to discard Etonomy and go fully with Klik without the segretation. We’ll need to think about the tradeoffs and make a choice. Yet at least I feel we are in a good position now with solid name choices.
Haha yes.. “Makes me think in two concepts: 1. Something powerful to break weakness and 2. The beginning after and ending. Like the relation between sunrise and sunset”
Unfortunately abstract concepts don’t play well in the general population. Many may not even make the connection to ascendant believe it or not. Actually many Asians would not even know that vocabulary word. K.I.S.S. principle.
Yeah I was thinking in line with previous level of complexity your were thinking of, but it seems you've recently concentrated more on simplifying the names. Which is a good idea.
Marketing focus groups with average IQ folks cause me to sober up. Also a very competitive desire to compete and win. I don’t want to put the project at a disadvantage. I would like to keep a technical name so maybe we will opt for the segregation and Etonomy. I think it depends on whether we want the token to be E or Klik.
Another reason I do not like Escendant is because it is an overplayed, vague theme of rising together as a movement. I despise political movements. This is about decentralized diversity where every person can do it there own way, or form a clique with the like-minded. So it is about synergies not really about corrupt, inherently flawed (i.e. monolithic) political movements.
I read those three articles and got the following statements as takeaways regarding consolidation rather than 100s of apps:
“...a mobile app to create apps for users without needing them to code...You would simply enter some basic information and the app would generate an app for you on its cloud server. You could then download and install this app on your phone and ask others to do the same by sharing a link or QR code.”
I think that statement does not capture the significance at all. And it is not even just because automatically programmed apps is a pipe dream.
The consolidation that the blogs I linked allude to have more to do with being able to integrate well all the apps. Economies-of-scale is the generative essence. This requires either a large monolith with access to all the centralized databases or an exodata (i.e. open database) blockchain solution with all third party programming being inherently able to integrate.
And I believe the consolidation will also be about better and more fine-grained control over what third party programming can do on your phone. Instead of having to manage all these disparate apps which all want to access everything on my mobile phone (e.g. contacts list, camera, etc) the master app will control what these third party plugins can access and the user will have total and fine-grained control over when and how. Think of it more like an app browser, instead of all apps having the same level of access to your computer or mobile phone. Btw, I thought of this term “app browser” some years ago perhaps it was 2014 or 2015.
IOW, radically simplify the management hassle and crap the user has to deal with, while increasing functionality and integration. Maybe you will understand then why I am also working on a new programming language. I want to build a new platform and get rid of the forced autoupdates and so much crap I hate.
“...the appeal and positioning of a social app is often fixed from the outset, it is difficult to shift it too much subsequently. Hence users are prone to leaving to explore newer and more novel social apps...To invest successfully, Dong feels that one has to understand human nature and fulfill user needs, especially for social apps...”
Indeed and when they switch, they can’t take their data with them to the new one. We need the open data that a blockchain will provide.
By removing the monopolistic walled garden lock-in, dApps developers have to compete in a meritocracy to provide the new features that users want. Note dApp developers will have ways to earn money. I will explain those business models in the future.
