📣 BMW Tests Blockchain to Track the Mileage of Rental Cars

German car manufacturer BMW is testing a new blockchain project. With DOVU the running distance of rented and lent vehicles is to be traced. DOVU is one of five start-ups that have been tested in practice since February as part of the BMW innovation programme.

The idea behind the DOVU system is to encourage drivers of rental cars to record their routes. The start-up company provides the recordings to BMW, the drivers receive DOV tokens for them. For the project, the start-up works together with Alphabet, BMW's fleet manager. The recorded data should help BMW to better understand how the vehicles are used and what effects their use has.

DOVU's plans are ambitious: "The plan is to become a ubiquitous reward system that works across multiple vehicles, to develop a unified wallet for token rewards that you can use in your BMW to jump into your second car and earn more tokens to spend within the ecosystem," said DOVU Product Manager Alex Morris. The start-up also wants to be used in smart cities. To this end, DOVU is already holding talks with a number of cities to explore earning and payment options, for example on public transport.

Both BMW and DOVU belong to the MOBI consortium. The merger of large parts of the automotive industry aims to help the blockchain achieve a breakthrough in the mobility industry.
