There are basically two types of innovation available to an entrepreneur when trying to enter into a saturated market. They are: creative innovation and disruptive innovation.
I will briefly talk about why entrepreneurs innovate. I am sure that before now you have constantly heard the word innovate or innovation, especial in this period when entrepreneurship is a trending issue in most countries of the world, especially developing countries. I simply see innovation as additions or changes to existing products or services (I"m sure you don't think that innovation is exclusively for products). Entrepreneur use innovation to create a niche for themselves.
Creative innovation as the name implies is the gentle and soft version of innovation. All entrepreneurs do here is to just tweak the existing product or service, i.e the entrepreneur merely makes adjustments. It sort of befriends the existing product or service.
However, disruptive innovation as the name implies is the tough and troublesome version of innovation. it does not come to befriend or mingle with the existing stuff, rather its primary aim and objective is to displace and boot out the former product or service.
Using the lighting industry as a classical example to explain these two concepts, you will remember that kerosene is the light fuel oil used in lantern to brighten up the environment back in those days. However, when John D. Rockefeller wanted to play in the industry, he came up with a creative innovation, all he did was improve on the standard of Kerosene, because one of the major challenges then was that some inferior kerosene usually cause fire outbreaks. All he did was to created a brand of kerosene called standard oil which guaranteed no fire outbreak.
On the other hand, when Thomas Edison wanted to play in the same industry, he came up with a disruptive innovation (Light bulb which was powered by electricity). it came to displace the use of lantern and kerosene. John D. Rockefeller lunched several campaigns to discourage people from using the light bulb, but we all know the winner of that war.
In this manner, cryptocurrency is a disruptive innovation. It was created to disrupt the money market as we know it to be, money has we know it be is gradually becoming virtual. @tojukaka said " in the nearest future our children (for some grand children) will ask us how on earth we were able to live without cryptocurrency".
Just like electricity, cryptocurrency is suffering from negative publicity. Institution that are benefiting and profiting from the existing centralized currency market are wagging a war against cryptocurrency which offers a decentralized market.
The battle has began and it is important that you pick a side, or else a side will pick you.
I hope you're convinced and not confused that cryptocurrency is a disruptive innovation.
