What is Verge?

Verge describes itself as a cryptocurrency "built with a focus on privacy" and "Completely anonymous and privacy-focused". The latter claim is especially strong, yet the technology employed does not seem to be best-in-class to meet this claim. Verge transactions are executed over Tor or I2P in order to theoretically achieve good network-layer privacy, and optionally allows users to execute transactions using the 'Wraith protocol' (see the 'Black Paper'). The Wraith protocol appears to execute transactions using stealth addresses, which is a privacy improvement, but cannot be said to make transactions 'completely anonymous'. Other techniques such as Cryptonote ring signatures and ZKsnarks offer more complete blockchain-level privacy.

Verge was originally released as 'DogeCoinDark' in 2014 and was subsequently rebranded to 'Verge' in 2016.
