Cryptocurrency, a new way to create
So I’ve been curious about this whole crypto-currency deal since I first heard of Bit-Coin. The thought of a purely electronic liquid form of money seemed like a really cool consequence of this internet world of ours. Its functions, however, seemed quite limited. At that time, it looked like only hackers and political refugees were using bit-coin, and it felt pretty unnecessary to my life and professional goals. These consist of film production, writing and direction, which have obviously little to do with crypto-currency. That, has, nevertheless, been changing as of late. With now the market having expanded at the birth of Steem, Ethereum and all the new players, its possibilities as a new means of exchange are growing exponentially.
Being an aspiring filmmaker, the biggest problem one faces is the search for means of production. These encompass money used to get equipment and hire people to work towards a video project. The gateway to mainstream film has always been at the producer’s desk, since he controls the money, but nowadays that may be subject to change.
I present you the case of Braid, a psychological thriller film currently in production that has been entirely funded through a crowdfunding blockchain site called WeiFund. Helmed by Joseph Lubin as executive producer, this news might seem relatively unextraordinary, yet it may set the precedent for how artists can get their projects running in the future through the incredible opportunities offered by crypto-currency. In many ways that future is already here, with hundreds of creators posting their art and earning revenue through Steemit.
Needless to say, I’m endlessly excited for the coming years and can only dream of the projects we will be able to enjoy as audience members now that the walls between wanna-be artists and the industry are being torn down.
