I'm no investment adviser but the signs are obvious to me that cryptocurrencies are starting to crest the wave into mainstream.
I am having more conversations at work and around the place generally with people who are aware, if only a little, of the excitement building in the cryptocurrency space.
There is curiosity. There is an understanding that something is happening. For some, there is the understanding and the hope that with disruption comes opportunity.
What is disruption?
Disruption is a term used in innovation theory (probably derived from economics) which notes that technology and innovation can re-write the rule book of certain industry sectors and traditional ways of doing things.
But it's more than that. Disruption can change everything.
Think of the dual futures posed by two very different science fiction franchises: Star Trek and Blade Runner.
In the one, we are invited into a future bleak and uncompromising: dystopia.
In the other, the invention of the replicator means everyone has everything they need: utopia.
Technological disruption can be the invention of the replicator; social disruption can limit its access to the few.
Not many conservatives are into technological disruption - unless they can own it. Control it.
The beauty of true disruption offered by cryptocurrencies and altcoins is so many of the advances being made are in the public sphere. Deliberately accessible for all.
Back to the topic at hand - why are we on the crest of an investment wave?
The sheer breadth and quality of ideas and blockchain technologies being posited, tried, tested and implemented at the moment is staggering.
Check out, if you haven't already, the potential of factom. Of siacoin. Of smart cash. Of power ledger. We are already thriving on the steem blockchain, and new innovations are happening all the time right here.
Check out EOS. OMGods, EOS.
These are just some of the altcoins I'm aware of. There are literally hundreds more.
Blow your mind considering what the future holds when these techs really hit their stride. What the future holds for business, for government and (importantly) governance. For trade. For law and intellectual property.
Then go and investigate a few other altcoins and see what they're up to.
Why are we on the crest of an investment wave?
Have you been tracking the total market capitalisation of the cryptocurrency space lately? It's just broken through $200 Billion USD. That's a lot.
And yet a small fraction, the tiniest fraction of the global economy.
And that's what altcoins are aimed at. Disrupting the global economy. And not just a bit of it. And not all at the same time.
All of it. All the bits. Into the future.
The times, they are a changing'. The crest is coming.

Crypto has a lot of roadblocks to get over before it can be considered ready for lift off. A lot of the ICOs are scams which hurts the credibilty of cryptos in general, many of them have raised millions of dollars without a tangible product. If they cannot fulfill their development timelines then it will ultimately invalidate the coin, making it worthless. There has to be some sort of regulation so that ICOs that launch are of a certain quality and investors can be certain that it is not a scam
Yep - it's certainly a case of buyer beware at the moment :-)
Yeap, we are living days of innovation or The future is now!
👍

G'day. You're onto it.
When the Australian National Government News Organisation (ABC Australia) runs a story by University Economics Professors proclaiming Bitcoin is going mainstream - then it probably is already there!
