KODAK-COIN: Photographers hope for fair payment & protection against having their pictures stolen - OR just a desperate attempt to save an outdated company

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemians,

The news about Kodak attempting break into the Crypto market is crackling down on us from all corners. I know that we have a big community of photographers, filmmakers and journalists here on #steemit . So lets try to observe what this development means for our professional field:

1) What kind of company is Kodak?

KODAK is based in Rochester, NY, founded by George Eastman in 1888. They are the biggest rival of Fujifilm, a Japanese company with a very similar portfolio, selling film, paper and chemicals. The biggest failure of KODAK is considered to be it's trouble to find a market place in digital photography. Other companies, above all from Japan, overtook KODAK by miles and KODAK tried to concentrate on print. But now, they seem to attempt a bold move: KODAK-COIN

2) The launch of KODAK-Coin

Shares of KODAK more than doubled to close at $6.80 Tuesday (as you can see in the graph above). The company's stock has been slumping in the course of 2017, shedding more than 70 percent of its value. KODAK-Coin is certainly a game changer for the company - at least, for a moment. But KODAK-Coin's launch is tied strongly to their idea of developing a mode of fair payment for photographers and their artistic rights.

3) What does this mean for the future of photgraphy?

KODAKOne

Depending on how many photographers join KODAK's platform 'KODAKOne' it might have a huge influence platforms like #appics or #steemit .
The KODAKOne can be used to license and sell pictures. The photographers can use the KODAKCoin as a method of payment. KODAK wants to create an income for photographers, not just when they are being commissioned by the NYT, but also when content creators on #steemit or #appics utilise their photos to provide images to their blog posts. I believe this is fair but I can't see it work as for now. KODAK is claiming that one of the most important features of the KODAKOne platform will be it's continual web crawling. KODAKOne wants to monitor and protect the IP of all images that are part of the KODAKOne catalogue.

provide “continual web crawling in order to monitor and protect the IP of the images registered in the KODAKOne system.” The detection of unlicensed images online can easily be verified from the blockchain transactions.

Jeff Clarke, CEO of KODAK:
"Engaging with a new platform, it is critical photographers know their work and their income is handled securely and with trust, which is exactly what we did with KodakCoin,"

Kodak found the Crypto Know-How in their new parter: WENN Digital. On the 31st of January KODAK and WENN Digital will offer their coin through an ICO.

Let's see what happens in the next couple of days!

its learning from your mistakes and adapting to new ways of doing things, i think its a briliant idea considering most people dont get paid while their photos is used all over the internet, a solution that might actually work if photographers take it serious

Hi @joendegz , yes, at least there are a couple of traditional companies around that dare something.

我知道柯达是彻底退出中国了

Its a good move from the part of the company, yes there is going to be one hitch or the other, the pace at which they fixes those problems will make or mar the company.

Hi @deeclown , yes. And what do you think about the register?

See how Kodak stock skyrocketed after the announcement:

Amazing!

Yes, I know. It's impressive.

It certainly lifted KODAK out of a crisis - for now.

Let's see how sustainable this development is.

Hi @kobusu , that's very kind of you. Thank you!

I've had small brushes with this company through various employments. Trust me ... they are a whole bunch more than meets the eye.

This plan has some amazing "it's about time!" aspects. So far, the companies that do crawl and monitor for image theft have only been interested in squeezing as much as possible from the creators and the companies that create tools for the creators.

I'm definitely gone to find out more! Thanks for this info.
