Iota basic research

A "reverse guide" to this guide on reddit.

I am not affiliated with Iota in any way, I just find the technology and cryptocurrency in general cool, and want to provide fair information for everyone.

1. Name

IOTA is definitely a serious coin. I'm not sure what constitutes a joke of a name, but I'm pretty sure Iota doesn't count.

2. Graphs

While Iota hasn't been trading for a long time, the volume is high enough that the graph looks reasonable and doesn't have any sort of weird craziness. You can check for yourself on the coinmarketcap page.

3. Social media

On twitter, the posts are mostly about new adoption of Iota. Not much in the way of development there. There is also some stuff on the blog, but that's also lacking in terms of software development progress. The github is fairly active, though.

4. Roadmap

Theres a roadmap on the blog, as well as this, less roadmap-y but still valuable read. The core developers seem to stress the IoT label a bit; IOTA, in my opinion, makes a better everyday currency (you know, paying for stuff) than an IoT networking infrastructure.

5. Community

The Slack community is very active, and not just with speculative hype (although, as with any coin, a more-than-healthy dose of hype is unavoidable). The forum is a bit staler, but is mostly acceptable as Iota is in an early stage. Github is a different story, there is a small subset of the community that contributes, but not most of it (I, personally, strive to be in the former).

6. History

Iota has been around for a while; it didn't just appear during the ICO hype. It has been in development for quite a while. The distribution is somewhat questionable, with whales and whatnot, so keep an eye out for huge dumping later on.

7. Conclusion

Iota has a cool technology behind it, but depending on how pedantic you are about the community and marketing behind it, Iota may or may not be for you. After all, first coin with a cool new idea isn't always the one that ends up being successful in the end.

I hope you found this review unbiased and informative; if not, please tell me how I should improve. Thank you for reading!

Sort:

Knowledge of IOTA is spreading. It needs further refinement but the potential is great:

  • scalability
  • 'no fees' structure

I still have to make a video of how the IOTA wallet works in practice.
