It Appears the Video Could Have Been Staged!
I Just Got Taken for .11 BTC!!
Even though the video appears to be a fake my warnings about 3rd party exchanges are real. Please do not leave more than you can afford to lose on any exchange. This is a great education for the whole community.
Tips to Protect Your Crypto Currency.
- Do not leave your crypto currencies on exchanges if you are not actively trading.
- Use a phone dedicated to 2FA (2 Factor Authentication). Do not use email 2FA.
- Use an external hardware wallet like Ledger to store your Crypto Currencies.

This is horrible, the post really gives me a warning in handling the cryptocurrencies. Anyway I've started to think that internet is in fact the most dangerous, and the safest methods are actually the ones with lowest level of technology. More inclined to use paper wallet instead. Thanks for the post! Great one.
Wow, he took all the precautions with his Exchange account and still it got compromised:
I guess the only real precaution left is to transfer coins to the exchange only when you want to trade them.
You got it!
What do you think about openledger exchange Randy?
Thanks.
Damn! More reason not to keep your crypto on exchanges, folks! Hardware wallet or cold storage wherever possible!
Wow . . . that was heartbreaking to see. You could tell he was visibly shaken by what was happening. Just horrible . . . and to actually see it real time . . . man . . thankfully he was able to move some of his funds before those thieves got all of it. I don't know what else to say . . . just horrible man. You're a true hero for giving the earnings from this post to him.
Posts like this combat the negative stereotype that emerged because of heartless thieving bastards like the ones that took this guys hard earned money . . .
Wow as much as I trade most of my holdings are on Paper wallets
Hi @hilarski thanks for your public service announcement. For your 3rd tip, when you use an external wallet, would that serve as a back-up, or would that be the sole storage location of your cryptocurrency assets?
That is the main wallet but you can also use Paper wallets as a backup.
I see. Thanks @hilarski. Does it also work on Steem?
I have been warning and warning and warning about this. I have been wondering why nobody was taking this seriously. In previous posts I had explained how my Poloniex account was taken hold of. I was also warning that if Wells Fargo employees aren't trustworthy, then why should Bittrex or Poloniex employees be trustworthy?
People think it's not going to happen to them. Please review my post and comment, thank you. https://steemit.com/teamaustralia/@lucky.digger/scams-continue-to-trick-victims-is-your-steemit-com-account-safe
Certainly Polo is in trouble and people shouldn't be using it at the moment. I guess this is just another reminder that when $$ is involved, everyone needs to be super vigilant. Ensuring the security of cryptos is much different than ensuring the security of paper fiat.
That sucks , my husband had $36,000 stolen by mt gox but at todays prices it would be about $90,000
I lost 19 bitcoins from the Mtgox scandal. I don't bother doing large transactions with exchanges anymore.
After MtGox and the like I don't know why people keep coins in the exchange. Put your encrypted wallets on a few USB sticks keep one at home, one at work and one in a safety deposit box you'll be much much safer. Best of luck getting your btc back.
Thank for the information & suggestion ...Warning accepted & perform according to your suggestion:))
How the hell did they do that? Get a Ledger!
You can really daytrade cryptos if you're keeping them off the exchange unless someone knows something I don't.
But I have been thinking about this a lot and will probably start moving a lot to wallets.Bitcoin is easy but not all coins are as easy to move. This is the biggest hassle of dealing with Cryptos.
You should:
Use a Email Address that is as random as your key and use it no where else.
have a long random password.
2FA on your phone with Authy.
And if you can move what you plan to hold long term to cold storage and have backups of that in case of fire and theft.

Thanks for sharing. This is something people definitely need to be aware of. Hardware wallets. Only leave what you can afford to lose on 3rd party exchanges. Decentralized p2p exchanges are safest. Sending .02 btc to donation addy.
Sorry, I will reimburse you.
Wish I could do more :) Hopefully people can pull together and help this guy recoup some losses. And hopefully some lessons learned on everyone who sees your post.
It appears this could have been staged. I have removed the video. If you send me a BTC address I will reimburse you.
Aww that sucks. Well we tried. Glad you figured out it may have been fake. Here's my btc addy:

Much appreciated @hilarski
Hello @hilarski, a few days ago a friend here in venezuela had a bad experience on this subject, they cracked his account in Bitrex and stole all his cryptocurrency. Imagine having all your savings in virtual currencies and ending up with nothing. It gave me a lot of sadness and anger at the same time. This is happening worldwide, precisely because of the increase in the prices of bitcoin and other Altcoins. It is very important to share this type of information so that other people are not victims of Cyber-Thieves. Having your Crypto safe is not an option, it's a necessity! Thank you for sharing this.
Absolutely Carlos, it appears the video was fake but the warning is still true.
Of course, we all have to take care of our assets in Cryto. Even more, here in Venezuela, every cent is worth. regards
ok so whats fake as i dont understand ? the video of this guy or what ?
Check it out. I took down the vid.
I'm so confused. Is this a parody? No one got hacked??
So you made a fake video? Sounds very lame IMHO.

That is scary stuff. It seems like exchanges can rarely be trusted. I have a few hundred dollars worth of coins on Poloniex but I need a safe place to buy some ETH quick in order to prepare for EOS launch in a few days.
Thanks, this is a real eye opener for newbies like myself...
Could you please help me understand how do i :
Any posts/video would be immensely helpful.
Crooks are continuously upgrading their trade and figuring out how they can get in to your account.
Nobody wants to lose money. Thanks for your security tips.
I steel can't get mt BTC out of exchange !!!
You should trust no one !
=]
I can not believe it, this gives me chill, thank you very much dear friend @hilarski for this information
Have a great day
Guess what, I had the same situation with POLONIEX too, suddenly I got an email telling me a stranger IP address logged into my account. LUCKILY, I managed to change my password before anything happens, I did not put large amount of money in it either. So I guess I'm safe from the loss. But still, it isn't advisable to store the cryptos in an exchange.
I had someone log into my bittrex account recently. Luckily I had zero funds setting in my account. I quickly changed the password and added 2FA. I still won't leave money setting long on exchanges. What caught my attention was the email notifications that bittrex sends. I knew I wasn't logged in any that day and not near my laptop. I also noticed the IP address was foreign.
In the video he explains that he didn't even get an email which is even more suspicious. Yup, I don't trust exchanges. Load coins, sell coins, buy new coins, move to external wallet. Pain in the butt but you will be safe.
WOW This is terrifying. This is everyone in cryptocurrencies worst nightmare.
Great idea Hilarski, to help the guy who lost the 7 BTC!
Thanks heaps for sharing this!! :]
Today's lesson is: Always protect your bitcoins
There have been problems with phone as an authenticator, as in the bad guys just called up AT&T and had the number forwarded.
I saw that and i'm feeling bad how people can do something like that
thanks for tip
If it is fake than possibly coming lawsuit for damage to Bittrex's reputation? Unless I missed it, I don't see any disclaimer that the video is make believe.
This is alarming, the post extremely offers ME a warning in handling the cryptocurrencies. Anyway I've began to suppose that net is actually the foremost dangerous, and therefore the safest strategies are literally those with lowest level of technology. a lot of inclined to use paper notecase instead. Thanks for the post! nice one.
I'm sure glad this is fake. I was about to pull the little I even had out of the exchanges. However with that said I did make sure I had true 2FA set up on all my accounts.
Thanks for the tips.
Are u being real right now? Thats not a goodnews!
Yes this is 100% legit! Freaking tragedy.
This is crazy
Man, I'm sorry for your loss.
It wasn't me but I am spreading the news for the victim.

I noticed he had some Steem, do we know this guy ?
