Quantum computation used to be just a dream a few years ago, but now this technology is being slowly but steadily introduced into our daily lives. Considerable advances in this sphere have made it possible for computers to perform pretty complicated and challenging tasks. We witness a real revolution: quantum technologies will soon become available for individuals without special computers, and Qilimanjaro is one of the platforms that contribute to it.
What is Quantum computation?
If you imagine how much usual computers have changed the humanity, you can surely understand that quantum machines will also be a groundbreaking introduction. We won’t explain the nooks and crannies of quantum calculations – it’s very complicated even for physicists and mathematicians. What you should know is that quantum computation is much, much faster than usual binary codes – calculations are done instantly. If a usual computer may need to spend thousands of hours to perform some specific complicated calculations, a quantum computer will need 1-2 seconds for it!
“But why don’t we use such computers at home?” – would you ask. The thing is, in order to sustain quantum superposition and be able to perform calculations correctly, such computer should be kept in specific conditions (vacuum, a temperature close to 0° K, and total absence of electric-magnetic field) – it’s impossible to sustain them at home.
Where are Quantum technologies used?
In fact, the potential of quantum technology implementation is limitless – they can be used in any sphere. Today, the application of quantum calculations boils down to four major fields:
- Communication. Introduction of apps, systems, and high-end network device for safe and fast communication.
- Metrology. Special sensors can be used for healthcare and DNA research, geography, imaging, etc.
- Simulation. Quantum computations can be used to create demonstrators that base on physical platforms which exist nowadays.
- Computation. Creation of super-computers, experimental platforms, and systems.
What Qilimanjaro can offer us?
Although there’s still no fully-fledged quantum computer existing (Google, IBM, and other giants are still working on it), we are close to the implementation of such device. Qilimanjaro offers a cloud-based ecosystem for enterprises and individual users. It offers us the following:
- The quantum computer. With the help of an intuitive cloud-based platform, users can perform various complicated computations. In the beginning, the power of 10 qubits will be available, but in the future, creators plan to reach the power of 100+ qubits (for comparison – Google’s computer has about 20-30 qubits).
- Consulting. Qilimanjaro team will assist companies and users planning to implement quantum algorithms to solve their issues. Besides, these algorithms will be optimized for any device based on qubits. Additionally, the creators will run and analyze research performed on their quantum computer.
- Qibo – an open-source computing language for programming. It was developed for the contributors and independent workers involved in quantum programming.
- The community of developers. Qilimanjaro will serve as a platform for decentralized computations uniting the powers of developers, researchers and programmers. The most outstanding contributors will be able to participate in the bounty program.
Where Qilimanjaro can be used?
Although the platform is at the initial stages of its development, it may already prove useful in various spheres. Let’s observe the use cases.
First, Quantum cryptography will boost security and take encryption to a new level. It can easily outperform the existing encryption algorithms and be applied to protect sensitive data. Secondly, the proprietary algorithms can study any problem and find solutions to it quickly – it helps to optimize schedules and routine tasks. Thirdly, Qilimanjaro processor will be able to train neural networks of some certain sizes so that they could self-correct efficiently.
Quantum computations can also be useful in the sphere of biology, chemistry, and genetic research. It will help us with the research of the environment and micro-world. For example, quantum computations can serve to figure out how this or that drug will influence a person, what’s the prognosis of treatment, and so on.
And, of course, quantum calculation is a real find for finance sphere: it allows for analyzing financial information and assessing risks. This will be a great solution for traders, banks, etc.
Bottom Line
The idea behind Qilimanjaro is, undoubtedly, unique and peculiar. However, we should note the fact that there is no fully-fledged quantum computer existing – most of them are on the initial stage of existence. Even Google and IBM are on the way to the creation of a regular quantum computer because a lot of mistakes should be eliminated yet. Therefore, the solution from Qilimanjaro must be not yet as powerful as they claim.
Is Qilimanjaro worth investing? If you’re an ardent supporter of quantum technologies and want to contribute to the development of this project, you can surely do it. But keep in mind that the team will have something substantial to offer not earlier than 2020.

Wow. Every next qubit doubles the previous computation power. "Skynet" can be pretty close. :)
Ha ha. I hope not but I get your point. ;)
