Paid Content Creation with Moderation - Narrative

I want to let you know about a new social media site that pays in crypto (or USD if you prefer to take the 15% cut to earnings for ease of not dealing with crypto exchanges). You might say, "But I'm on one of those right now."

True, Steemit and Narrative are quite similar, but there are some notable differences.

  1. Steemit is more mature than Narrative. Steemit is in Beta whereas Narrative is still in Alpha. Though it does have a cryptocurrency already, unlike Minds which is more like pre-alpha on that score, it doesn't yet give you the ability to actually create content. You can suggest a niche that platform members may vote into existence, but you can't write an article in that niche yet.

  2. Which brings me to the fact that it has some degree of "communities" built in. It isn't a true group like what you might be used to on a site like Facebook. Think of tags here on Steemit, only with a moderator and "owner" like you might have on a message board. So there is some leadership within a given topic (sort of like APPICS is planning) and that may foster more connection among the people writing on that topic. That remains to be seen.

  3. On Narrative you also have the option of either writing on a personal blog that is not in a niche, or writing content for a niche. There is also something called Publications for brands that allows a company/product/group to own their own territory and control it completely. With niches the members of the platform vote on what the niches will be and who the moderators will be. There is also an auction to see who gets to buy it and be the niche "owner."

Narrative has set the niche price to be the equivalent of about $75 USD, payable for that amount in Narrative tokens (NRVE). You pay a 15% extra fee if you want to use a credit card to pay for your niche in USD instead of converting to NRVE first on one of the exchanges that trades NRVE, currently two.

  4. While STEEM is a coin on its own blockchain, NRVE is a token that runs on NEO blockchain. I guess that makes Narrative more equivalent to APPICS than to Steemit, really. It also makes me hope Narrative is successful regardless of how much I participate on there, because it may help me recoup some of my NEO losses by helping to add value to that blockchain.

  5. Moderation within niches is very different from Steemit. Here I guess the downvote is the closest equivalent.

Participating

Right now as I said you can't actually create content. You can suggest a niche, upvote/downvote a suggested niche, and invite new people to join under your referral link. (Here's mine: Join Narrative)

It took almost a week for me to get approved after I clicked someone's referral link. I just had to confirm my email address a couple times, if I recall. First when registering to be notified when my round was ready to go, and then to put in my name, handle (indigoocean), and once more confirm my email address. Really easy. (Much easier than all that byteball stuff was.)

But since it isn't yet a live content platform, you're really just collecting NRVE in a semi-airdrop by signing up now and referring people. Actually, maybe that makes it more like a bonus program for referrals, though you also get some NRVE just for joining.

Anyway, if you think you may want to participate in a younger "content for crypto" community at some point, this is an interesting model and may be worth giving out your email address to get. Hopefully you've got several email addresses and can use one just for this sort of thing and email newsletters.

I'm going to continue participating on Steemit regardless of what other platforms come along, because I feel like I'm a part of a real global community of quality writers on here. But a lot of people aren't having that experience here. Maybe the moderation and niche ownership on Narrative will provide real readership community to more people. Time will tell.

Thanks for that info @indigoocean

You're quite welcome. Hope it turns out to be profitable to you.

I have little idea what I am doing, but a bit more of an idea than when I signed up for steemit - so here goes! Thanks for writing this informative post.

Glad it was helpful. And yeah, Steemit is clearly made by developers for developers LOL. We're lucky we're making our way on here successfully while it's still in such earlier stages. The Narrative folks are more business folks who hire programmers to get it done, so they think more similar to how the average end user thinks.

You're right about that ;-) incidentally, have you caught on to using @steempeak yet? A lot of features that make it easier to be resident on steem. I was firts introduced to it by Hitman Choi - @roundbeargames. Little Scribe @littlescribe has a nice video explaining a lot of the details too

I hadn't heard of it, but will definitely check it out. And thanks so much for the poetsunit upvote!

Me gusta tu transparencia y sinceridad amiga.

I didn't know they were in alpha yet! I guess this time it's my turn to use your referral link...! Which I just did :)

I'm looking forward to trying this one out. I think the niches are going to be amazing for people to be able to stand out and gain a following within certain subjects. Should be much easier to get rewards for minnows!

I think it is an important step in the "communities" direction. Would still like a real group experience to be created somewhere though... somewhere other than Minds, which I just don't like and isn't even crypto yet.

Thanks for the information my friend. Too many platforms are coming up that so similar in operation.

Just today I already joined two platform. I think i really need to plan myself and time not to be so carried away and at the end am not here and am not also there.

I will check out this one you talked about and see how it goes.

Yes, there are a lot! I think the success of Steemit and all the other Steem platforms has proven the concept, so now everyone want their own coin that does this, so they can keep the lion's share of the coin value!

I think there is room for more than just one though. Look at how Twitter, IG, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. all share the normal unpaid social media universe. They just carve out their particular niche and appeal to a particular audience. I think it will become the same in crypto. It's just that with crypto there is a lot of money to be made by getting there early, because the participation on the platform actually earns you money.

Yea early participation is the key but then focus is needed too.

I use try out a few of them that are not really stressful and see their process.

Yeah, I gave Minds a real try but just can't get into it. I can't stand all the political stuff always showing up in my feed even though I haven't subscribed to those people. Plus it isn't even real crypto yet. So that one had to go for me. I haven't had time to do anything other than sign up anywhere else. Steem properties are really taking all my bandwidth.

Steem has a lot of opportunities which am gradually seeing of recent and with time, they will be meaningful to everyone on the platform

Thank you for the information @indigocean

I'm going to continue participating on Steemit regardless of what other platforms come along, because I feel like I'm a part of a real global community of quality writers on here.

I'm of the same mindset but equally very interested in your post and the concept behind Narrative. What an interesting to be writing :) Thank you for sharing my friend.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see the workings of a model that doesn't use money invested/earned on the platform as part of what determines how much someone earns or can help others earn.

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Having moderators for niches may also open the door to curation of quality for the niche.

I think so too. The only difficulty is if you have a different perspective on a topic than the moderators and a topic you really care about winds up with a heavy handed moderator. This is what I worried about with APPICS too. But at least on Narrative you get to vote on who the moderators are instead of them being appointed by the platform.

That's a good idea so long as the moderators have to be re-elected at a later date.

I've signed up for it (using your link). Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
