ChainLink ICO. Is it a Scam? Were they unethical? Or was it just a massive mistake?
So in the world of cryptocurrency one of the biggest rumors going around right now is that the ChainLink ICO was a scam. In the interest of full disclosure, I was a participant in this ICO and was very bullish on them and their future but currently as the time ticks away with no real word on what they are planning to do the more it is starting to look like a very well played scam.
Currently, the only statements that have been made come from Sergey Nazarov on Reddit and advisor Hudson Jameson

If the statements are true then ChainLink made 3 massive mistakes with there ICO, the 3 mistakes are:
Communication. There are 4 ICO’s that I have targeted, ICON, Electroneum, ChainLink, and Cindicator. Of those ICO’s ICON has had the best communication with daily emails, the next best has been Electroneum who has sent me 6 emails, followed by Cindicator with 4. ChainLink sent me only one email and it was littered with enough mistakes that I thought it was from a scammer at first, so I double checked with other people who had signed up for it and verified it was legit.
Furthermore, while I have multiple ways to contact other ICO’s it was only ChainLink who didn’t have a good avenue of communication, they even shut down their Slack to the public this week. Right now, the only word everybody has is from Reddit, almost no one has a line of communication with ChainLink.
Smart Contracts. Ironically, for a company that has a working product designed to make better smart contracts, the deposit address wasn’t using smart contracts. So instead of automatically refunding everyone that was over the hard cap, ChainLink will have to manually refund everyone. That could take weeks and there is no guarantee you will get all your ETH back. Combine this with their horrible communication and you get Donald Trump… just kidding… well maybe.
I suspect the lack of smart contracts was due to a lack of execution. The 7 ETH cap, the unique hidden deposit address were all strategically designed to make for an easy and well understood ICO but they failed in the execution of that strategy with some people not having their deposit address hidden at all while others had there’s open up late.
Using Fiat as a hard cap. Sergey Nazarov statements on Reddit show a lack of understanding of the crypto market. He keeps insisting that the price of ETH rose from the pre-sale and that ethically it would be unfair for him to short pre-sale participants. The problem is why are you using fiat when you are doing an ICO in ETH?
Cryptocurrency isn’t stable so you HAVE to change it to the crypto you are using.
$32,000,000/$285=112,280.702 ETH
112,280.702-PreSale=ICO Cap
I just don't see how a person in the cryptocurrency world couldn't figure out this simple detail. Just look at how ICON has been running their Pre-Sale, its all in ETH because that is the crypto they are using.
This is very disconcerting and is something that shouldn't happen to a well-run outfit.
If ChainLink is a scam, what were the warning signs?
So what, if any red flags were shown by ChainLink?
- Extremely late whitepaper. It is very unusual to do a pre-sale before even releasing their whitepaper but that was exactly what ChainLink did. In fact, their whitepaper was so late that they pushed back the ICO an entire week to compensate for it.
- Pre-Sale Pooling. Their pre-sale was for high cap individuals only but in direct contradiction of the contract, people formed pools to buy into the pre-sale. Not only that but because of the pooling, several groups of people were able to bypass the 100 ETH limit. No consequences were ever seen and only some discussions were offered on how to send back the ETH that went over the limit.
- Silence. After pre-sale ChainLink went silent, with only a few peeps about their whitepaper undergoing scientific review. Eventually, they went completely silent with the only communication coming from the ICO email.
- No KYC. Despite prohibiting USA, Singapore and Chinese residents from participating ChainLink just required checking a little box proclaiming you weren’t from any of those nations.
All of these were warning signs but it could have also been a sign that ChainLink was understaffed, overwhelmed and didn't know what they were doing.
Where do we go from here?
I see 3 possibilities, of which I have a preferred option.
- Ignore the cap. Everybody who sent their ETH in gets tokens and ChainLink adjusts the amount used for the company. This is by far the easiest option since it will take a very long time to verify the amount of ETH sent and then send it back to the correct address. The downside is that it will make things more difficult in the future for ChainLink but I anticipate it would only be a short-term problem.
- Verify the amount of ETH sent to each address and then refund those who didn’t get in. This will take weeks and will be prone to errors or just plain failure. Just so much easier to send people their tokens.
- ChainLink is a scam, nobody will get their money back and the tokens will quickly lose their value. Least likely outcome but as ChainLink continues to flounder and flails about with no communication besides a few Reddit posts the more likely this outcome will happen.
As you can tell I very much want option 1, I still believe in ChainLink and would like to hodl on their tokens but what I suspect will happen is option 2. If option 2 happens I think ChainLink will lose a lot of support and goodwill, especially if it takes a long time.
What are the options if ChainLink is a scam?
Well, if ChainLink is a scam then for US, Singapore or China you can do absolutely nothing. When you claimed to not be from those countries you, in essence, gave away your right to sue in case of a problem, your only option would be to break the EULA you agreed to when you clicked on that box.
That won't happen, corporations will not allow EULA's to be broken in court because that would destroy a key part of their business strategy. So you are at the mercy of ChainLink, good luck.
For those not in those countries, you could try bringing a class action lawsuit against them but that action will ultimately end up being more expensive than what you lost in this ICO, so it most likely won't happen.
As the seconds turn to minutes and hours turns to days people's anger and frustration are going to grow, so if ChainLink really just made a mistake then it behooves them to communicate faster and more thoroughly than what they have done.

This time ICO of Chainlink was a full of miscommunication and mishandling. I hope they refund ETH as soon as possible.
Well, they went with option 2 and refunded everyone within 48 hours. Too bad they couldn't control the amount they raised in presale better, but in hindsight they were among the first to almost entirely sell out in presale. Your post just sounds bitter. ChainLink is as solid as they come.
