Give me some crypto-encouragement PLEASE!

I got into crypto trading starting about a year ago when the market was BOOMING, but still didn't make much and got out to spend my time and money on other things. I've been watching Suppoman on Udemy, which has been a great help, but I'm still disappointed as I begin to come into the market. Even this morning as I was coming here to make this post I saw an article written about an investor who is saying that alcoints are overpriced and underwhelming when it comes to returns. I can see exactly what he means, even when the W forms and a green spike appears on the price afterwards, doing the math usually signifies only about a 3-5% gain. It makes me mad because I'll invest in an altcoin that's on about a 3% rise and looking good (forming a W) and it either barely goes up or it goes down, and dangit if some other coin gained 10-15% in the same amount of time!

I know I should just HODL and wait for an investment to go back up, so I'm holding a few altcoins right now and trying to be patient. But what am I missing? Maybe I need to get on Coinigy and use some of their tools to find better entry-point prices. Do any other investors have more advice? I'm happy with a 5% gain if that's all I get sometimes, it's a gain, but I want to be able to spot those 10-15% gains!
