HOW TO SPOT FAKE BITCOIN MAILS

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago

Have you received an email from a Bitcoin-related website? Do you want to know if it's genuine? If you can answer yes to at least one of the two questions, then you've come to the right place. As always, my articles depend on something from reality. One person asked if an email he had received was genuine. I got permission to use his example, and I've chosen to do that - to help you (readers) to spoof fake Bitcoin emails. In this scenario, it is allegedly an email from Bittrex (a stock exchange).

In this article, I take the starting point of the image above. There are 5 red boxes with a number based on each. It is every point in this article explaining why a red box has been added about that text. I can already tell that these 5 points reveal that the mail in question is fake. One could only agree!

Item 1: Missing name

When you receive a real email, you have usually given up your full name. Therefore, your name should also appear in the email. If you know Peter Madsen, there will be "Hello Peter Madsen," or "Dear Peter Madsen,". If your email contains "peter.m" (for example), then it may be "Hello peter.m." - and that's a sign that it's a fake mail! Unless your user name therein of course is "peter.m".

Item 2: Unnecessarily uppercase letter

There is no reason why they type "Update" in uppercase letters. False emails typically contain basic grammatical errors and therefore this is another point to be aware of.

Item 3: Address

If you look at the URL very quickly, it looks real enough. However, one will quickly discover that there is a slash "/" between .com and 1. This makes no sense, and in such mails you do not make mistakes like these.

Item 4: Address (continued)

Looking forward to the URL, you can also quickly see that it is a ".ml" page. These domains are free and therefore "hackers" use them. The domain in this case is actually com17 [...] 54.ml, and the subdomain is bittrex.

Point 5: Grammatical error

Unfortunately, for the sender, it was too soon to write that email and the selected sentence is invalid. Keep in mind that it is a professional website that sends the mail! Therefore, it must be fake.
