When I first started out in crypto I started with a simple strategy. This method is probably the safest to do when starting off. You want to make sure that 70-80% of your holdings are btc/eth. The other 20-30% consisted of mid cap alts or top 10 from Coin Market Cap. These tend to be the less volatile cryptos. It gave me the opportunity to get my foot in the door while I deeply researched the entire cryptocurrency market.
Once I got my feet wet for a few months I switched my portfolio a bit from 70-80% btc/eth to more around 50%, and the other 50% did 40% mid/hi caps and 10% low cap shot takes with clearly good fundamentals .
Now during this Q4 run headed into Q1 of 2018 , I started using a more aggressive or the "degen" strategy. I went down to almost 25-30% BTC and 70-75% alts. During Alt season this is a good strategy. I call it the degen strategy because when you are holding only 25% btc you leave your portfolio vulnerable to taking a hit. That is because if you are positioned in mostly alts and btc starts to move up or down rapidly your alts will take a hit . It can also have the best returns. That being said, when trying out this one its important to keep an eye on the market constantly, especially btc. When btc starts to move its time to move out of some of your non long term holds.
Like always these are just my opinions and things I have tried. This is not financial advice. I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on these different investing strategies.
