Ever heard of something like crypto-collectibles? Let's hear how a blog post of Decentraland describes them:
"A crypto-collectible is a cryptographically unique, non-fungible digital asset. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which require all tokens to be identical, each crypto-collectible token is unique or limited in quantity.
Typically, crypto-collectibles are visualized as real-life objects such as pets or avatars. Each token has variations in specific attributes and there are limits to the number of tokens that can be generated."
Probably you have heard of real-life collectibles; like stamps, antiques etc. So if we are in a digital era now, why the collectibles would not be digital as well? The most famous crypto-collectible so far is CryptoKitties. An article from cointelegraph shows us how a bright success story it has been: CryptoKitties Sales Hit $12 Million, Could be Ethereum’s Killer App After All
Nowadays we see many projects like CryptoKitties coming up, MyEtherPonies is one of them. After all, ponies are as cute as kitties, right?
Let's take a closer look at MyEtherPonies;
MyEtherPony or (“MEP”) is an ethereum based digital pet game. In this game, you can collect ponies, trade them and breed them. Each pony has a unique look and trait and actually, that makes crypto collectibles so popular. Because the pony you gonna have is so unique there is only a single one of it on the whole world. A real-world pony is also just like that, right?
Just collecting an item could be boring after all. What else? MyEtherPony lets you take care of your pony and enroll them into competitions. Those competitions come with prizes. They plan to add more functions to the system and I support this fully, as the more you can the on the platform the more excited it is gonna get.
MyEtherPony is an ERC721 token and each of them is unique. MyEtherPony Gene Science makes that possible.
Let's suppose you liked this project and want to start. How to do it?
You need a PC with Google Chrome and some ETH to be able to buy a pony. You can import your ETH wallet within the website and the plus side is they don't store your private keys on the server.
Ponies do not have a fixed price and you should bid them on the marketplace section of MyEtherPony website. I like this bidding idea, in fact, it adds value to the collectible in the mind of the user.
There will be only 5000 Gen-0 ponies available for bidding, Gen-0 means the first generation of ponies.
Let's say you have more than one ponies. You can breed them! So that you can have mutated ponies. Biology enthusiasts like me would love to guess the possible outcome of breeding of two ponies for sure.
You can collect them, treat them as pets and care for them, what else? Competitions! the first one will be racing competition in which you can put your pony in a race with other ponies. Seems fun!
To be honest the biggest reason I am not into collecting things is the physical burden they impose on you. Storing them, cleaning their dust, protecting them etc. But guess what. With digital collectibles, you don't have such issues. Projects like MyEtherPony proves that crypto projects can be fun!
