All "money" is real as long as people believe that it has a value and this value tends to be circumstantial.

Imagine that you are on Sahara with a sack of gold and there is this other guy who's got drinking water - both of you have some sort of commodity but your "money" is useless = worthless while his water means survival = priceless ;-)
