Hackers stole the processing power of many Indian government websites to mine cryptocurrencies, researchers found.

Citizen portals similar to that of the municipal administration of Andhra Pradesh (AP), Tirupati Municipal Corporation and Macherla municipality are among the many Indian websites that are found to be infected by cryptojacking malware. Cryptojacking, because the term indicates, permits hackers to access victims’ computers for the only purpose of mining cryptocurrencies. Hackers do that by fooling victims into clicking malicious links on emails, or by infecting websites with JavaScript code by loading it into the victims’ browsers.

They seem to have done the same to several of those government websites mainly because they have high traffic volume, found Indrajeet Bhuyan, one amongst the protection researchers behind the revelation.

“Hackers target government websites for mining cryptocurrency as a result of those websites get high traffic and the majority trust them,” he stated. “Earlier, we tend to saw loads of state websites getting damaged. Now, injecting crypto-jackers is additional trendy because the hacker will make cash.”

An effort from Indian media to talk to JA Chowdary, the IT adviser to AP’s Chief Minister, yielded a joke response from him.

“Thanks for notifying us regarding the AP web site hacking,” it said.

However, nothing concrete has been done to repair the problem. The malware code continues to run on AP’s public portals. CCN’s recent efforts to reach their websites additionally met with a downtime error.

Cryptojacking on the increase
It is not solely the govt. websites that are on the list of cyber-criminals. they're conjointly crypto-jacking extremely trafficked enterprise systems for mining cryptocurrencies – in secret. PublicWWW found over a hundred sites that are running Coinhive javascript that mines Monero coin. a similar script had earlier infected over 200,000 ISP-Grade routers globally and is among the highest 3 crypto-mining malware on the net, alongside Cryptoloot.

Hackers are inclined to use cryptojacking as their prime tool to earn cash illicitly, for it doesn’t need important technical skills. The darknet sells cryptojacking kits for a mere $30, finds a Digital Shadows report. it's a less expensive alternative to a far additional advanced ransomware attack, which means more cash for fewer risk.

Nevertheless, cryptojacking continues to be a poor man’s alternative for its inability to usher in any substantial earning.

“With a hash rate of 80 H/s and CoinHive’s payout quantitative relation, a mineworker earns about 5.8 USD per day and web site on the average, that supports our observation that web-based cryptojacking presently provides restricted profits only,” states a report by the Brunswick University of Technology.

Less risk also means less money!
