I remember "e-mailing" my girlfriend in 1992. I was in the US and she was in Germany. I had to go to the ONE computer we had on my college campus that was set up for this, I needed a professor to sit over my shoulder and tell me how to do it, it took about 45 minutes to compose and send, and I didn't know if she received the message until the next day.
In some sense, buying cryptos and transferring across exchanges feels a lot like that today.
