On his latest IAmA, Bill Gates expressed his opinion in Crypto Currency:
The main feature of crypto currencies is their anonymity. I don't think this is a good thing. The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing. Right now crypto currencies are used for buying fentanyl and other drugs so it is a rare technology that has caused deaths in a fairly direct way. I think the speculative wave around ICOs and crypto currencies is super risky for those who go long.
But in my opinion, his answer shows a limited understanding of cryptocurrency. With all the respect, I strongly disagree with him. Anonymity is certainly not cryptocurrency's main feature. It's even actually difficult to keep anonymity with most cryptocurrencies, especially if you tie your information to an address, could be from when you create trading account.
It's easier than traditional currency to trace every penny you spent. Because the ledgers are public, your transaction history is easily and can immediately known.
And, of course:
Right now drug dealers use their laptop running windows 7 to speak with drug users using Skype and they record their deals on Microsoft word and check their profits on Excel. permalink
Again, all due respect, I would have thought he would have a better answer for this question.
