Kik messaging app launches new cryptocurrency: Kin

Kik, the popular messaging app, announced it will launch a new ethereum-based coin, Kin, as their primary transaction currency.

"This is something we've been experimenting with since 2014," said Ted Livingston, Kik's founder and CEO. "There are a bunch of ways to earn it: You could watch ads, you could host a great group chat, create a great sticker, build a great bot. So there's all these different ways as a consumer you could come in and earn value and then spend value. And how that makes money for Kik is, we create a new cryptocurrency for Kik such that there's only going to be so much of it. And we set some of that aside for us. So that if more and more people transact in this cryptocurrency, the value of it grows."

Messaging apps like Facebook Messenger already offer peer-to-peer payments, but Kik's usage of cryptocurrency provides a new twist, as most apps use local currencies for payments.

Exciting times we're in right now. Who would've thought all this would be happening just a few short years ago? I for one didn't. Let Kik kick things off a bit.

I liked the effort at the pun. ha

Haha, thanks, it was my best effort :)

lol...I remember using the heck out of old KIK back in my single days. Glad to see them come on board. Great write up, keep up the good work...following you

thanks! yeah used to use it too lol. Interesting thing is this might not just be a good way of generating money for Kik, but could also attract a ton of new users from the crypto community. As far as I know, there is no popular chat app on blockchain. Steem is the closest thing

I agree, a chat app within the blockchain structure would really be a huge benefit to them and to us as users. Its about that stage where its obvious the old tech is about to go away and decentralization is where the people of the world need things. So any major player open to getting involved is a plus in my opinion. Really awesome news and article by you...gonna have to keep my eye on this as it develops

This is huge. Not only for Ethereum but for the cryptospace in general as other giant corporations will now need to start seriously thinking about blockchain implemention. The future looks brighter than ever.

Good article.
