Hacker returns over $26 million in Ethereum stolen from CoinDash

CoinDash hacked

CoinDash started it's trading platform in July 2017 and was hacked soon after loosing 43,400 Ethereum tokens.

Surprise, surprise!

For unknown reason, 2 months later the hacker returned 10,000 ETH.
On Friday hacker returned another 20,000 ETH!

How the hack happened

The hacker hijacked CoinDash website and managed to replace their ETH address with it's own. All funds being sent for a short period of time ended in his wallet instead of the exchange's one.
CoinDash admitted the attack and refunded all victims the tokens they sent to the exchange.

Why did the hacker returned stolen tokens

Nobody knows for sure, but there's some speculation regarding why did he decide to give back majority of the tokens.
One theory is that the hacker(s) messed up and didn't manage to cash out on the stolen Ethereum and it may be too late now. Their ETH address has been blacklisted on all major exhchanges and is also being monitored for any activity. They may be stuck with no way of cashing out on stolen currency.
Other theory is that it could be an inside job or even that this was CoinDash's job to gain publicity.

CoinDash said it is still working closely with law enforcement to track down those responsible for the hack.

13,400 ETH are still missing.

Good stuff! This is like a community watch :)

Great post. Thanks for sharing. Who hacks and then returns it lol. Makes sense though if they were not able to cash it out.

I intend to keep an eye on further developments as this is indeed interesting. Other theories make sense too, who knows, maybe this was a PR job. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what people say about a business, the most important is that they talk a lot!
